I'm totally with you in hating rules, and yet, I've learned that I absolutely need them because otherwise, I just don't create structure and deadlines and discipline.
Look at it this way: if over time, you are good at creating your own deadlines and structures and rules, then you don't need external ones. I've been slow to give up the fantasy that I could manage lots of free and unstructured time. It's embarrassing for me to admit that I don't do that well. It's been embarrassing because dislike of rules and all has been a huge part of my identity and how I see myself. Turns out how I saw myself wasn't helpful. I hate rules, but that doesn't mean I don't need them!
So yes, ADHDers often need more structure, a lot more, than we'd instinctively go for. So I think your instincts are right to go for some rules and structure, even though you, like I, hate rules and lack of flexibility.
