Hello from new guy

Hi everyone, I'm new here and thought I should introduce myself. I'm 35, married, have 1 daughter and 3 cats. My daughter also has ADHD (I'm sure my cats do too). Last friday I fired my dr because although he has helped me with my diabetes a lot, he will do nothing for the ADHD. He acknowledges it but won't do anything for it. With the way my insurance works, I can't afford to go back right now.
The ADHD has affected my relationship with my wife. She is a teacher and teaches struggling kids all day long. I guess when she comes home she doesn't want to deal with ADHD anymore. I guess I'm what you would call the combined type. I have been the inattentive type for a very long time but lately the impulsitivity has gotten very bad. It can lead me to do things that I shouldn't, but just don't seem to care at the time. I don't use that as an excuse though, I see it as a sign to seek more help.
Anyway I just wanted to look for people who were maybe going through the same thing. It helps to know you are not alone.

Re: Hello from new guy

HockeyGuy,

Welcome. This is a great place to settle into yourself as someone with ADHD. We know what it means to feel the tide of impulse rise and send us spinning and crashing through the day sometimes.

Hang in there. As you learn about yourself you can begin to help those around you learn about you too.

Peace,

Zman

I have type 2 diabetes. It's not terrible yet, just controlled with medication and proper diet (I struggle a lot with diet, food is my weakness).

Helloi HockeyGuy

Welcome!

Have you ever tried shelled hemp seeds?

Very good for long term energy.

And balancing blood sugar levels.

There is a tonne of nutritional benefits,

add to just about any kind of food,

Very high in 3, 6, and 9 essential fatty acids.

And other good things.

Also very good for digestion.

Very High in fiber.

I have read that it compares to fish in protein.

That must be tough,

to know when,

you are having a bad ADHD "day".

Or,

are you having a bad diabetes "day".

Or both,

having a bad ADHD "day" and Diabetes "day".

Diabetes and ADHD have very similar signs,

although ADHD is more "all the time" in comparison,

if the diabetes is controlled.

Nice to meet you.

Have a nice day.

Consider

There has been studies conducted that have concluded that moderate exercise 30 minutes per day have been proven to lower blood sugar even if you don't lose any weight. I suggest drinking water when you feel hungry so you don't eat as much. You should also watch the Doctor Oz show, he mostly discusses topics that involve weight loss and dieting. If I were you I would focus more on the Diabetes than the ADHD. Diabetes can kill you ADHD can not.

It is hard to stick to a diet and regular exercise if your ADHD is fighting you every step of the way.

I agree.

Keeping things simple,

is mandatory.

I try to do two things at once.

Like walk to the food store.

Walk home from the food store.

But if I need to go somewhere,

If I walk far that day,

I don't need to walk to the food store.

When I eat better,

I feel better,

but sometimes I don't eat very well.

I think there is something to some type of support system that could work ,

but it would take a lot of strong communication.

Re: Hello from new guy

I have hired a new Dr but he can't see me until next month. I do not know if my ADHD is worse when my diabetes is not controlled but I wouldn't doubt it. I am now at my lowest weight in over 5 years but the ADHD is at its worse point so far. Not sure which direction to turn to right now, feels like I am being pulled in a bunch of different directions.

Take it one day at a time.

It won't be fixed overnight, but after a long time of more consistent behaviors and support.

I would pick one direction.

Get blood sugar in good control.

In fact I am going to start trying to control my own blood sugar better.

By avoiding simple sugars as much as possible.

And working on a simple daily routine.

I am glad you brought up the topic.

Then it should be easier to figure out the ADHD "parts".

That is the only thing I would do first.

ADHD is not life threatening,

in the short term anyway.

Controlling blood sugar is also good for ADHD.

Low and High blood sugar indirectly effect cognitive brain functioning making ADHD worse.

Especially if the person has both ADHD and Diabetes.

Low blood sugar equals added lethargy in people with ADHD.

High blood sugar equals added hyperactivity in people with ADHD.

Re: Hello from new guy

I actually find that high blood sugar equals lethargy, for me. Even at work, which is very physically demanding, I find that I am lethargic after I've eaten too many carbs.
I've always been an odd ball anyway.

Interesting.

Good Point.

Makes sense.

I do find I am sensitive to sugar and get super hyper but also have a terrible crash as well.

This might seem like a crazy question but does a person with diabetes get hyper from sugar?

I wonder what the difference is between type one, type two and type three diabetes in relation to ADHD?.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
