5-6 pages maybe. When I started meds I wrote 11 pages of drivel in about 3-4 hours. Usually when that happens the content is just insane and unusable.

Re: Hyperfocus to Genius (or anything positive)
Look at it this way: if you ate less healthy and didn't exercise your symptoms would be way worse.
That's in my experience anyway. I was once so unfit that I was physically and mentally slower. And now I'm about average in fitness and food does help me concentrate. Without the right food my medication would hardly work. And exercise can get me through an unmedicated day. Personally I choose fish oil over snake oil. I'm curious though, does snake oil give you a boost of energy also? Supplements, certain groups of healthy food, and even chocolate can give you a cognitive advantage. I only eat dark chocolate to increase the amount of time I can focus on reading.

Re: Hyperfocus to Genius (or anything positive)
The only thing I've ever been able to hyperfocus on is a good video game, because it's the only thing stimulating enough.

Re: Hyperfocus to Genius (or anything positive)
Snake oil is a metaphor (for quackery). Although maybe you were making a joke and I ruined it. Haha.

Re: Hyperfocus to Genius (or anything positive)
Growing food:- I hyper-focus in the garden once I get out there and it takes a lot to jar me back to the rest of the world.
Even rain, tiredness, thirst don't stop me... I push through pain, sometimes I'm bleeding or have multiple blisters... I just keep going until someone interupts me or I run out of light. I hate getting pulled out of the garden. Of course, this hyperfocus results in fresh food for my family and gives me a change of pace from work and such. Could be worse ![]() |

Interestingly, the fish is the symbol for Christianity because during Roman times when admitting you were a Christian would have you thrown into jail, it was the way they identified themselves, as it was the only meat they ate. Satan is depicted as a snake, even in Revelations. Good and evil. Fish oil and snake oil. Just thought I'd share that sudden thought. Please, no atheists take this as an opportunity to jump on me. I'm not trying to convert anyone. It was just a curious observation.

Re: Hyperfocus to Genius (or anything positive)
recently I've been using my hyperfocus to teach myself to be ambidextrous. A week ago I couldn't finger tap to music with my left hand. Now I can write (though still very messy), move my hand naturally to any music, and I can almost juggle! It's crazy. It's almost like I have 2 right arms
Before meds I would have never dedicated an entire week to just using my left hand. |

Re: Hyperfocus to Genius (or anything positive)
Art, I do great at work because I hyperfocus on my projects. The only down side is that if I'm really in "the zone" I forget to eat or take bathroom breaks which caused a bladder infection a while back. But mostly if I like the project it really works for me, even if I don't when I start drawing I remember why I like drawing, it's just that add makes it hard for me to just start.
I've been passionate about art since I was a kid, it's the only way I could pay attention in school. Everything else though, my interest in other stuff rises and falls like the sun. |

Re: Hyperfocus to Genius (or anything positive)
Am I the only person that thinks when I work on projects I do so much better on medication that when I 'hyperfocus' without medication I hardly think it's worth a mention?

Re: Hyperfocus to Genius (or anything positive)
I do a little better on projects with meds, I notice I'm better at the follow through and I'm better at picking up the small details. The only time meds are better for me is if I don't particularly care for the project.

Re: Hyperfocus to Genius (or anything positive)
I hyperfocus like crazy on books - I can get sucked into a novel and just read and read and read until I turn the last page and then I still can't stop thinking about what I've read and it's hard for me to turn my thoughts elsewhere. I sometimes hyperfocus while writing (I'm an aspiring fiction writer...sort of). Also sometimes while cleaning my room I go into this crazy cleaning mode which I think might be hyperfocus.
Other than that I tend to hyperfocus on pretty pointless things like TV or video games - I don't even really like video games but the stimulation is almost irresistable or something. fracturedstory, I am not on medication so hyperfocus is about the closest to actually being productive I can get When it happens to turn on while I'm doing something useful, of course. Damn brain. |

Re: Hyperfocus to Genius (or anything positive)
Maybe it's this little eye strain problem I've got but the most I can read is maybe three chapters of a novel. And only one very long chapter. Thanks Orson. When I was reading something like Harry Potter before meds I would read The Order of the Phoenix in a day.
Before I got glasses I could barely read. Yet I still read all 7 Harry Potter books. My writing calls for me to be very descriptive. I used to write like normal authors and just get an idea out, then add detail. But with Ritalin I can write with all that detail. I've been meaning to get back to my art but without meds I just can't do it.
