1st post, so please go easy on me.
So, I'm 46 and I've had anger issues for many many years. I finally get up the courage to meet with a therapist to discuss these issues. After hearing that I was diagnosed with ADD/ ADHD as a kid (back in the late 70's), she mentioned that recent studies have found a link between adult ADD/ADHD and emotional control. I still have some symptoms of ADD, but I had just chalked that up to being stressed out. I hadn't thought about my childhood ADD in a long time.
With what my therapist said fresh in my mind, I think I want to explore medications to help with my ADD/ADHD symptoms. However, I have no idea where to start. How does this process work? Who do I see to get started? Does my doctor interview me and prescribe medication or are there tests that can help determine dosage and best medications? I know virtually nothing about any of this and am anxious to get started. My therapist feels very confident that medication will not only help with my easily distracted nature, but also help with my anger. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Well its good that you're addressing this because you cant outgrow adhd. If you have to be rediagnosed ...there are no tests of any kind that can diagnose or confirm adhd. Generally when it comes to meds people see a psychiatrist. They are generally able to diagnose, treat, and monitor your meds.

I would expect that your therapist might have some suggestions. You can try the referrals section on this site or you could try CHADD.
Ideally, you want to find a psychiatrist or psychologist specializing in ADHD... someone who is competent enough to notice any other disorders that may better explain your symptoms and someone who will be sympathetic to your struggles.

My doctor re-diagnosed me recently. He gave me a couple pages with questions and I checked the boxes that applied. I got a summary including a list of symptoms that I was positive for.
