New here...may have ADD

Hi everyone!

My names Kelly and I'm 22 years old and I am starting think that I may have ADD. I've always noticed that I worry or think too much and stress over a lot of small things, which leads to overwhelming thoughts and a lot of forgetfulness and not being able to focus on one thing at a time.

About 3 months ago I started going to school online and I work full time with a 3 year old daughter, so my life has been pretty hectic. I started to notice that it's really hard for me to stay focused and motivated to get anything done because I'm constantly thinking about other stuff. When I'm working I constantly find myself getting distracted and not finishing my work in time. When I'm trying to do homework I get easily distracted with household chores and my daughter. And when I try to do the household chores I end up not finishing one chore before jumping to another then I feel overwhelmed because I didn't get much done. It's really affecting my relationship with my fiancé now too because the house isn't always clean, I'm always forgetting or misplacing somethin, and I'm always stressed.

I was just looking for opinions on what could be going on. Does it sound like ADD, anxiety, or just plain laziness and forgetful?

Re: New here...may have ADD

Honestly, it could be ADD or it could just be a hectic life being hectic. School + work + parenthood is certainly a lot on anyone's plate! Diagnosis can be tricky and it really depends on a lot of things, so I'd strongly suggest a doctor's visit, to start.

Re: New here...may have ADD

I began feeling like my life was hectic when I started college. I've always had ADD symptoms, but it was never diagnosed until I sought for it recently.
I think I also developed generalized anxiety when life got more complicated.

How long do you remember having ADD symptoms? What comments did your elementary teachers write on your report cards? I looked at my report cards and was surprised how virtually every report card mentioned inattention.

Re: New here...may have ADD

As far as I remember I have always done well in school but I noticed after I was about 12 I would lose interest and end up daydreaming in class. And I waited until the last minute to do any assignments or studying. But I still made good grades. My parents don't think I was ADD or anything. They just thought as I got older I started to not care so I just wouldn't try as hard as I should've been. Now that I'm in college I am realizing that I do want to try hard to stay on top of all of my assignment and keep up with the housework, but it's just hard to stay organized and get things done. It's like in my mind I know what I need to do but it's hard to actually get it done. My fiance says that I just need to start focusing on one thing at a time and quit worrying about everything else. I try to tell him that my brain just can't do that but he doesn't understand that.

I only have insurance that covers family planning visits and birth control so I tried explaining my symptoms to my gynecologist just to get some kind of medical opinion and because another symptom is I'm always tired and I thought that might have to do with my birth control or something. And she said it sounds like ADD but she couldn't officially diagnose me bc she's not a family practice doctor. If I see a regular doctor for this it will be expensive and my fiancé isn't supportive bc he hates any kind of medication that could cause addiction and he doesnt think i have ADD so it's hard to try get some help with this. That's why I searched online and I'm very thankful I found this forum!
