school is about to be my biggest fail

Everyone will be mad at me and disappointed. I tried but I'm just not interested in my classes, everything I want to do I can't because this college sucks(don't have the classes). I really want to get work done but end up never doing it and when I'm about to, its right before the class is about to start(real procrastinater) and I never get to school on time even though I want to and wake up 2 or 3 hours before it start but somehow I'm always late ...its gonna be my biggest fail, I made it this far, something a lot of people couldn't do but I'm about to fail. To be honest I don't think I have real support with this ADD thing, nobody really wants to believe it or help even a little. I'm by myself so I pray I find a way to get out of this mess. Hmmmmm what now?

Are any of you in college?
Did any of you try but ended up dropping out or something?
If you did drop, what did you do next?
I'm not on meds so I'm wondering if any of you went through college with no meds? Succeeded or failed?

Have anything to say to me to help? Can you relate?

Thanks everybody

Re: school is about to be my biggest fail

Hi, I think you need to go and see a specialist and talk about treatment options. I know the lateness thing is a real problem for lots of people here (not me). I´m a procrastinator.

good luck

Re: school is about to be my biggest fail

You are not the only one. I was told that I was a huge dissapointment at university, school was a nightmare. I dropped out, later I was offered a masters degree for the work I had done on my own and without a degree. All I had to do was do one course and the degree was mine, turned them down because I knew I would not be able to do it. Everyone said I was lazy. Truth is ADHD without the proper meds is terrible. IF I knew then what I know now my life would have been very different. Get treatment. Its not your fault. Tere is simply no way you can do study like that if you have ADHD and are not on meds. Its not your fault.

Re: school is about to be my biggest fail

i got expelled one up..for many of the reasons you listed above but also because i was walking out of lectures and disrupting other students...

is there anything you can salvage from it, academic records et al...im not one to tell you to drop out...but...if its screwed beyond all repair you will only start to damage your self esteem, mental health and your bank account with not much to show for it....

i have learnt to accept that HE is not for me, and realised that not everybody is suited to university nor is it something anybody has to doeven if they are, too often i feel schooling is like a processing mill for college and people like me who are more hands on/not academically able get left behind, i think university is seriously over rated (if you have the bank that allows it and all the time in the world, go ahead and study whatever you like) too often people are mislead into this frame of mind where college is the be all and end all!

do what you love, life is so short, having x many degrees but being totally miserable because you feel its what you have to do rather than what you want to do really serves no purpose

dont beat yourself up about this sweety ! something will click one day (im working on this too)

i'm medicated and not doing much of anything, im working on improving my self and finding happiness, anybody that want to get gripey about it can try and run in our shoes for a day and they'll soon find out what its like.

im looking for an apprenticeship, but for now...i need to be stable and happy and that is my number one priority to myself

Re: school is about to be my biggest fail

just to help, i am in college, im in my 1st semester now, i am medicated (35mg Adderall XR), and so far i seem to have adjusted fine. im actually surprised at that since i thought i would have a hard time not being at home, and having to deal with classes meeting sometimes a week, homework not due for weeks at a time, etc. but im fine.

if you think it would help, check with your doctor to see if he thinks youre AD/HD and maybe getting tested, and if you in fact are then talk to your doctor about getting medicated.

Re: school is about to be my biggest fail

First, like everyone else said, see if you can get evaluated. Usually, Student Counseling can do it and it doesn’t cost much. But, at my brother’s university, they were not up on inattentive ADHD and they missed it. My mom compared his scores to mine – they were very similar and we have the same LDs, and she took him to my doc and he got diagnosed a couple of weeks ago.

My brother managed his AA untreated, but he does have documented LDs and he did get accommodations. He went part time to a community college. He did one year at uni - just one class each semester and he barely passed. My brother is very laid back, cheerful guy. He did not mind his general ed. courses and likes school.

I dislike school, especially general ed classes. I was part time at community college. My grades were OK but I hated sitting in class for so many hours, not really understanding what was being said (Auditory Processing Disorder). I got diagnosed last fall and decided to take the spring semester off. I have not gone back.

My brother is back at the community college working on getting a certificate in a computer field – not sure what. He is taking just one class and has a tutor.

This is just like me I am living like Flora. I take classes at a school of music, but it is not a university or college school – just a sort of conservatory. I won’t get a degree, but I could eventually teach. I do weddings sometimes.

So get evaluated. Consider Community college and maybe go part time. Consider a trade. Honestly, plumbers and carpenters do better than a lot of people with degrees. Are you talented or creative in art, woodworking or computers?

If you are in your early 20’s, remember the 30% rule. You might need to still get a little support from your family. It might take you longer. If you have your heart set on doing something that requires a degree, you can do it. Get diagnosed, get some support, go part time if you have to. Get the accommodations. Live at home if needed. Start at community college and go on from there.

Sorry I'm posting in the guy area!

Re: school is about to be my biggest fail

You are not alone. Been experiencing the same thing and to tell you the truth, I`m planning to take a break next semester, but I don`t know how to tell my mother about that. She doesn`t think that what I`ve been experiencing is something serious.

I have 6 classes right now and they all have laboratory classes, so things are really hard for me. And I`m doing good in any of the classes. I might fail 3 of my classes.

I don`t know what to do either.

Re: school is about to be my biggest fail

Yea the sucky part is I would have to pay the school back if I withdrew. I don't have the money to do that. I have to ride it out now, it is soo hard and I started school so bad its gonna be hard to survive. I might end up going crazy and just try to pay the school back. I know next semester I'm definitely not going, I should've never went this semester but that's what I get for listening to people that doesn't understand me.

Re: school is about to be my biggest fail

I was getting F's and withdrew from numerous courses, when I began college. I would go to baseball practice, and instead of going to class, I would sleep in the library.

I began getting all A's after I was married. I was unmedicated for most of this period, because I hadn't been diagnosed. My anxiety was so great that my heart was constantly beating fast.

Re: school is about to be my biggest fail

People sometimes don`t take this seriously. Most of my friends think that I`m just lazy and some says I`m stupid. Well, we can`t do anything about that.

Just finish your classes this semester, and try to have a break next semester c:

If you haven't done so already, are you going to make an appointment for a diagnosis before it's too late, and see if medication can transform your life like it has for some here? Good luck.

Re: school is about to be my biggest fail

I understand where you're coming from. I had parents that pressured me to attend school when I personally didn't feel ready to handle the responsibility of post-secondary education. I got forced into the situation anyway. What you describe is similar to what I would do; I knew I was failing my classes, I would panic about it, and yet I couldn't muster the determination to do anything about it. I wouldn't attend classes I found boring, I would ignore any work that I could make up in an examination, and often I would miss out on important work and just not care about it.

It really sucks. I failed twice, it cost a ton of money, it got me nowhere. If you want my advice:

1.) Get treatment immediately and only involve family members who are taking your plight seriously. This might help you salvage your term

2.) If you don't feel ready at the end of the term, don't take more classes. Don't waste your money on something you're not ready for and something you know you can't handle.

Don't let your family pressure you into these situations. Education is really important but I can't stress how pointless it is to pursue education when you're not capable of appreciating it.
