Switching from XR to IR

So I just had a med check/follow up with my pdoc. And we discussed the fact I have to take my current Adderall XR twice daily. 20mg in the Am and 20mg 5 hours later. The point of the visit was to discuss adding a third dose or possible supplementing it with an IR dose.

About half way through we decided we should look at just going with a straight IR version. He was saying the XR is expected to last 9-12 hours where as the IR is expected to last 4-6 hours. So he dosent like the idea of me taking 40mg daily when it seems the first half of adderall is working (its just the timed release dose after is doing nothing. So to sum it up I am now trying 10mg AM then another 10mg a few hours later. I also have the permission to then add a third dose in there on evenings I have class or need to focus for school.

So when it comes to switching between XR and IR is there anything i need to be aware of? He said I wont know any diffrence, but what are others personal experiences?

Re: Switching from XR to IR

Well, going from IR to XR, I will say that IR is much more of a "jolt". I hate how it kicks in. My head buzzes and swims from it for a few minutes until I get used to it. The first week I got headaches from it, then it was fine. But you'll get side effects from new meds that first couple days regardless.

I personally like the smooth kick in and smooth exit for the XR. IR leaves and it's like I have attention span, then suddenly, it's gone completely, and since I don't really experience crashes, I could never tell it was gone until it was GONE. XR it gradually fades out, so I can sort of tell when I'm getting spacey and know that time is running out, which helps because if I'm aware I'm being spacey, I know how to compensate for it so it's not a complete disaster. If I'm not aware, I relax my mind like I do on the meds and things just go all wrong because I'm not aware I should be extra mindful of certain things, if that makes sense...

Also, junk food would just absolutely kill it. An hour in, 3 hours in, it didn't matter, it was gone after anything that was loaded with salt, sugar, or grease. XR isn't sensitive to food like that, I can eat some chocolate and it won't kill the meds. On the other hand, if I ate healthy they lasted for almost 6 hours.

Re: Switching from XR to IR

Just so you know per the manufacturer adderall xr is not supposed to last more than 8 hours. I get 5.
