Hard to explain simple events????

I always struggle with memory recalling! It haunts me everyday in social conversations, at school, reading, writing... It's just a terrible thing you know?
Someone asks you
What books do you like?
What was that movie about?
What songs do you listen to?
What movies do you have?
What did you just read?
What did your friend tell you?
What did you eat today?
What did you do today?
What do you do on a daily basis?

These type of questions kill me! I fail to answer these normally & it creates awkwardness.. When I answer questions, I am trying to remember while answering them & I end up pausing a lot and I feel like I can't remember all the time. Who deals with this? Is this even AdD

Re: Hard to explain simple events????

ha ha I don´t know the answer to any of these questions!!

Can´t remember, can´t think. When someone asks me "how was your weekend" unless someone ended up in hospital I just can´t remember. Obviously my life is so dull.

Re: Hard to explain simple events????

And you see, this is why I don't like to blog
Usually my "blogs" will consist of a few lines that might as well be a status update that nobody even cares about. :P

Just out of boredom, I'm gonna answer the questions you posted

What books do you like? ...um, I'm not an avid reader...
What was that movie about? ....uhh... what movie?
What songs do you listen to? ..... I play christian music in the background, but "listening" isn't quite my specialty...
What movies do you have? .......I don't own movies, is that weird?
What did you just read?...... this stupid question.
What did your friend tell you? .....what friend? oh yeah, you're my friend, right?
What did you eat today?.......... I've had oatmeal for breakfast for 24 years, cool huh?
What did you do today? ........go to college... oh joy......
What do you do on a daily basis? .....Weekdays: college. Saturday: church. Sunday: homework

This thread reminds me of another thread about not being sure what my interests are... I probbably should post something there about that.

Re: Hard to explain simple events????

Actually I remember vivid yet random details about everything - I want to give a really thoughtful, interesting answer to these kind of questions so I never know what to say; if I just say oh my mother in law spent the day with us Sunday, well that sounds boring and superficial;

but then do they really want to hear about her coming early (eek!) and we went shopping, or news about my ex -sister-in-law (double eek, not nice) or how I thought that my husband had grown up in the apartment she has now, but no they moved there when he had just started college; or what a beautiful early fall day it was and the trees just starting to turn and all the families in the park when we went for a walk ....?

Re: Hard to explain simple events????

i have trouble more giving answers when people ask me to 'talk about myself' or 'tell me about yourself'. im much better off when specific questions are asked like ones you listed

i dont have much trouble explaining things, so much as i have trouble understanding very simple things and concepts (typically social ones, probably due to my ADHD-C to a certain extent and my Autistic Tendencies)

Re: Hard to explain simple events????

I just say the first thing that pops up in my mind. I give a different favorite band/movie/book to every person that asks.

Doesn't really matter anyway, my favorites change so quickly, that my answer probably was one of my favorites at one point.

And..as for what friends say... Yeah, that's why I'm such a great secret keeper. I completely forget about their secrets.

I've found over time I'm much better at lying than I am at remembering, so I just make up answers for those questions.

Re: Hard to explain simple events????

I hate when I am in a situation like a job interview or doctor's appointment or whatever when the person asks "Do you have any questions?"

I tend to freeze, and always end up saying, "Not that I can think of at the moment."

Re: Hard to explain simple events????

I have a similar problem as you, I hate broad questions, especially when it comes to movies or books. For a while it was pretty bad, but then I decided to just write down those common questions and have a set 'answer' for it. I was taking drama at the time, so that's probably why it made sense to me. Saved me from staring at people with a "Do. Not. Compute." expression on my face.

For what kind of books I like to read, I'd write down my favourite genres (sci-fi, fantasy, mystery), some of my more commonly read authors and a few 'joke' responses since I was such a huge reader. "Any book I can get my hands on. Mom used to say she wasn't sure my nose WASN'T superglued to a book"

Same with music, though I'd remind myself to remember to 'neglect to mention' a few genres if I were talking to family. Notably, heavy metal and such. lol. If you have iTunes, it can be helpful if you go to your 'top played' songs to get an idea of what your favourite songs are. I wouldn't even know if it weren't for that!

For the rest, I would ask them what in particular they wanted to know about the movie. Otherwise it just wasn't happening. If you wanna know if it's funny? Oh sure, suddenly I can think of things I thought were hilarious. Stuff like that.

Re: Hard to explain simple events????

I'm always willing to answer questions like that, even if I do get momentary brain stuck.
My problem is talking about it too much.

I'd probably just talk about the current favourite books and movies.

You could try writing down that list and write down some possible answers, and then update it every now and then.

Re: Hard to explain simple events????

I have a very good long term/visual memory but awful ultra-short term memory. So if someone asks me what i did last weekend it's not that hard for me to remember, i could even remember what shirt i was wearing etc... But if you ask me to bring this or that on my way home, it'S almost impossible for me to remember to do so...

I also feel scared that people will judge me when they ask which books i like to read, because i really hate reading and i don't even own books. I fear they might think i'm an uneducated fool. I sometimes get puzzled looks when i tell people i don't like books and that reading is a boring/sleep inducing/unexciting activity.
