I've run out of reasons to get up for
![]() I feel so restless. I just can't sit at my desk. I'm supposed to be working, got two big deadlines coming up but every time I look at my work I get this strong urge to get up. I've already made myself a cup of tea, cup of coffee, had a smoke, visited the loo and got myself some water. Now I'm surrounded with mugs and cups of various drinks and I still can't concentrate. ![]() I've got this strong urge to get up and do something else but I've run out of ideas apart from sampling every flavour of tea and coffee from the coffee machine in the department. ![]() I could go for a walk but I don't think I'd come back. And I have to work!!!! ![]() |

Re: I've run out of reasons to get up for
Hmm, I know that feeling!
Why don't you try and set yourself a timer? For example, do some work for 30 minutes and then go and get another drink? Try and set the timer on your phone or something so you can see the time counting down. |

Re: I've run out of reasons to get up for
That's a great idea. I'll do that. Well, after another cup of coffee and a smoke.

Re: I've run out of reasons to get up for
I can be very fidgety and physically hyperactive. I used to keep a stress ball on my desk and a rubber band around my wrist. When I couldn't bear to sit anymore I would snap it. It helped some.

Maybe a 10 minute walk is what you need, to be moving. Some people find they think better whilst moving. sending hugsx

Re: I've run out of reasons to get up for
Fuzzy, why don't you set yourself a timer as suggested, do some work during that time, and when the timer goes off, reward yourself with that walk or something? Would that work for you?
I know I've got a billion things I should be doing right now but I can't seem to get off the boards ATM... LOL!

Re: I've run out of reasons to get up for
You are right. It's the time when normal people start going home and I still haven't started working. I just have to or I'll never make my next deadline. Timer set. Just ten minutes. I should be able to do something constructive for at least ten minutes right???

Re: I've run out of reasons to get up for
I just can't do it.
Ok, here's my 100th attempt. 5 mins later: Brilliant. The work I have to do is on the laptop and I've just realised I've forgotten the charger. Idiot!!! ![]() |

Re: I've run out of reasons to get up for
I feel you Fuzzy. I spent the last 2 days trying to do my lab report. Had it right in front of me but couldn't put pen to paper. Kept getting up and taking care of other things. It just feels so impossible even though I know it's so easy. Even set timers. Eventually time just ran out and nothing got done. Same, tired story of my life.
I wish I could pause the world or vanish until I can pull myself together.

Have you tried the "That was easy" trick of using a Staples button or computer app, and hitting it every time you get started or accomplish a step?

A few months ago I saw someone do a TV piece on setting up a treadmill as your desk. I feel like it was the TV show "60 Minutes" but not sure....
Anyways, here is a picture of what I am talking about: Tread Desk

Re: I've run out of reasons to get up for
Ugh... I get the same way if I don't take a walk during lunch. I used to buy lunch just so I could get a walk in without looking weird. Now I just bring lunch and walk afterwards, the rest of the office does it now too (I didn't start it, they just weren't all about the walks last year).
![]() But winter is coming. I don't know if I'll want to walk in the snow. I need something I can do inside that's active and will get the blood flowing without drawing a whole lot of attention to myself. |

Quote:
I wonder if this stupid need to get up all the time is just a sign of boredom. I love my work and I actually look forward every day to doing it but the moment I sit down at my desk, I just can't. Maybe I get up to look for a source of stimulation. People to chat with, ducks, geese and swans to watch, etc. In the evenings after everyone has left I tend to get up alot less, maybe it's because I know that outside the office will be as boring as inside the office. Lol..I just had a smoking break and I think, I got asked out. Not something I should get excited about but that hasn't happened to me in a while. Anyway, it was nice having a chat. I love chatting with strangers. But that's a completely different post I guess.![]() I think, I need to stop drinking so much coffee too. It probably just makes me more restless. Uggh..and now I'm going to implement all your ideas and do some work. Bad fuzzy! ![]() Last edited by Fuzzy12; 10-18-12 at 11:39 AM.. |
