Yeah I mean I guess you can keep and observe an animal as long as you give him enough space to be happy. Like part of my Biotech class is a zoology unit so we all keep animals in the classroom, and this one group has a ferret in a cage a little smaller than a fridge. That's just disgusting to me. Like, to put in in perspective, Imagine you being stuck in like a 3 story shack with the area of a King-sized bed, only getting out for about 15 minutes at a time to walk around on a leash. You're a prisoner who has committed no crime. Is it enough space for you not to die? Yes, but imagine how horrible your life would be.

A general rule for tanks is 1gal of water for 1" of fish. I still think that's too small, again it's enough for them to survive, but I just imagine myself being stuck in my room all day (I have an oversized bedroom with more room that I could ever need or even want). It would be a huge step above shack; I'd have a decent amount of space to walk around, and there would be a few things to do I guess, but it still would be a crappy existence.

Here's how I do it.
1.) First, I make the tank so that it's 5 gallons per 1" of the largest fish (If an African Dwarf frog was the biggest, would have 5 gallons while a fully grown Common Pleco would have 120 gallons) so they kinda overlap, example, if there were 5 African Dwarf frogs I'd still choose only 5 gallons for the first measurement.
- This is because the space that fish need to move around with can be shared- a 1" fish won't take away too much space from a 5 gallon tank
2.) Second, I add 2 gallons for every 1" in length of remaining fish (This excludes the base fish) and get my final measurement.
- This is because despite the principle explained in step 1, fish still need their own territory. The base is like the hotel lounge, while the extra gallons are for their individual rooms

So here's how the equation works out (It's mostly meant for smaller fish)
So I'll just pick a few random fish that I own.... say that I have
A 3" fiery swordtail
five 1" neon tetras
two 1" african dwarf frogs
One 2" red wagtail platy.

So I take the biggest fish, the swordtail, and multiply his length by 5 to get the base (15 gallons)

5gal 3in
---x --- = 15 gal
1in 1 fish

Then I add the lengths of the remaining fish and multiply it by 2 to get the extra gallons (I don't think you need to see the math but I'll post it anyways because I'm a nerd)

2gal(5in+2in+2in)= 18 gallons.

Then add them together
18+15= 33 gallons.

33 gallons is the bare minimum necessary to make that load of fish truly happy, but there's no such thing as too much room!

Yeah I'm a bit overly obsessive over my fishies' feelings, I always put myself in their shoes lol. It's why I feed them a tiny bit daily instead of feeding them a lot every 3 days- that would suck if you only got food when you're starving, I mean you'd still survive and be pretty healthy, but it would suck.

I still haven't worked out a formula for reptiles... right now I have a 7" African Sideneck turtle in a 30 gallon tank and I still think it's way too small- it doesn't even fit my formula for tiny fish, and I doubt 5 gallons would make much of a difference. I'm saving up money for some bigger tanks (I'm unemployed, BUT my 17th birthday is in 3 days! ) I'm thinking of putting him in like a 70 gallon tank at least, maybe over 100.

I'll get back to you guys when I think of a formula for bigger fish/reptiles, I'm thinking I should average in width, maybe even volume.

Three Dogs.

Growing up, my wife and I both lived with Westie's and Cairn (Terriers).

So, our first dog together was Angus McTavish the 23rd; a Cairn.

He lived to be 17 + years old.

Currently, we have our first (and ONLY) Scottie ... omg.

They make the other two breeds seem 100% cooperative and non-stubborn.

Another Cairn, who looks exactly like Toto. He's our only "normal" dog.

And we also have a "Chiweenie (designer dog = Chihauhua + Dachshund)."

They are named (in order) : Duffie, Remi, and "Chloe Bean."

The Chiweenie (Chloe) rules the roost.

I got two moar frogs for my tank!!! I had to empty out my piggy bank because I'm unemployed and my parents refuse to pay for anymore fish lol

Also put an anubis plant and 3 golden neon tetras in Chesterville... although I'm moving the tetras out as soon as I get all the dirt and dust cleaned out of my unoccupied 5 gallon tank.
