The Staircase wit
When entering one of those all in one sport centers and went squashing (bugs ? =P ) , a Martin & I decided to 'borrow' the left behind shoes of someone else (later we discovered this as a very commonly used habit) not to go bare footed sweat intensely for one hour.
But after an hour we were called to the office - we were caught on camera. Someone reported their shoes missing and they found those on my feet and on camera I was guilty as sin. Influenced by my friend on my sensible spot (I had to actually create morals not to steal, break & vandalize) I am red handed (footed ?) on tape. The guy explained us the entire sharade and now we'd have to leave because we're ingrates. I told him I was the guilty one, I'd assume everything and I'd face the consequences and they were not concerned by this. The misunderstood and thought I meant he was not concerned so I reexplained himself and I lost patience so gave in. We had to put the shoes back, go home, not come back for a while and leave as ingrates, which we were in their eyes. We had just done 15km non stop biking, paid €20.- and there is a sauna, Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, swimming pool, tennis courts, steam baths, sun banks and so much more. Many training machines that I hate - huge principles against it. They just don't motivate as much as going outside doing the actual thing ! I seem them on machines and wander... how ?!?! Than we went 15km back on the bike. We had stayed 1 hour inside. DAMN On the bike we felt terrible, stupid, impulsive & such weakling giving into the easiest way. It's true on myself I am moral-less about stealing & vandalism - I learn myself not to inflict upon other which I don't want to endure myself. I imaged all those things I wanted to tell him. Maybe my friend influenced me, so maybe is stupid - but I put my hands into the water of sin and am weak and guilty. It's pointless to keep talking to my friend as he didn't do anything, I am actually WEARING the shoes. It's pointless to contact our parents as being responsible adults they are out of this. They do not have relation to this. QUIT dammit saying we're invited and shouldn't therefor behave in such ways ! The one actually invited didn't do a thing besides manipulating me - I paid for myself, full price, assume A until Z and face the consequences and will put back the shoes in place and leave as a criminal if you want me to - but look in my eyes when it's concerning me. It's not because we're together we're both in this. My friends are not my legal representatives. They're my friends and perhaps moral supporters (and this case criminal terrorism advisers )Ok what did I learn - think, show you'r not weak and don't let others decide for you. Defend yourself if you have valuable arguments. If you know there is the risk of getting caught, don't do the crime if you can't do the time ![]() If I'd really learn every time from my mistakes I'd be pretty knowledgeable by now ![]() PS - don't mind the spelling mistakes, don't have tha patience to correct them ![]()

Re: The Staircase wit
I'm sure the staircase wit effect is wildly common among people on this board - I was kinda hoping on some other people's experiences

Re: The Staircase wit
A calque of French l'esprit de l'escalier.
L'esprit de l'escalier or L'esprit d'escalier (literally, staircase wit) is a French term used in English that describes the predicament of thinking of the right comeback too late. staircase wit (rare, idiomatic) Thinking of an idea or course of action too late to use it effectively, or the tendency to do so. [quotations ▼] afterwit The French l'esprit de l'escalier (or an alternative form) is more often used, or occasionally the equivalent German calque Treppenwitz. Thinking of an idea too late

Re: The Staircase wit
I usually think of a good comeback about 48 hours too late.
But this has saved me from a lot of trouble actually! |
