Dopamine releasing tick?

Hi,

I don’t know if it’s even dopamine or something else but it certainly feels like a quick release of “feel good” chemical, is this a compensating mechanism of the hyperactive part of ADHD?

Do some of you that have been diagnosed with ADHD have a characteristic that feels like a tick or something similar and will release the dopamine in your brain?

Thanks,

Could you explain it a little more please? I'm having a hard time understanding.

Re: Dopamine releasing tick?

I'm with SarahSweets -- a little unsure of what you mean.

Is this "pulse" of dopamine (or whatever it is) that you feel accompanied by an actual physical tic (a sudden movement or sound you make, like a head-jerk, face-scrunching, sniffle, or throat-clearing, for example)?

Or are you just referring to the actual "rush" itself as a tic?

Can you clarify?

Is this feeling similar to, say, a runner's high, or orgasm -- but maybe without the running or sex first?

I get rushes of good feeling, but usually they are related to things like the above, or a new project or idea I'm excited about, a glorious weather day, etc. -- it doesn't just happen spontaneously while I'm sitting around, most of the time.

Re: Dopamine releasing tick?

Sorry for the vagueness.

Hmmm… how to explain this weird action, I guess it’s not a tick in the Tourette’s form being uncontrollable and unsolicited. The closest I can associate it with is a form of action that adolescents seem to do when hyper, happy, excited, and exuberant. I suppose it releases some kind of chemical otherwise I would not feel the so feel good sensation rush that may last half a second. The reason why I may have called it a tick it’s because it happens shortly after something good has happened, i.e. playing a computer game and winning, it has happened since I can remember I guess I confused it as some form of tick rather than some residual childish action.

Ask further for more clarification if needed.

Sorry guys

Well, self stimulation means to perform a repetitive action, usually to relieve stress but some of us just do it. I'm prone to do it when I exercise, or sometimes when really exhausted I'll flap my hands.
But it could be a hyperactive thing too. Movement calms down that restless feeling and so you do it again and again. I prefer to jump up and down.

Winning will definitely increase the dopamine. My Paper Plane 2 on my phone is very therapeutic.

Re: Dopamine releasing tick?

dopamine is not actually the reward itself, but the anticipation of reward.

try and rewire your reward system to not find dopamine but to just create it e.g. doing something in the belief that it will generate the reward feeling (dopamine), not doing it just to receive the reward

Re: Dopamine releasing tick?

tics come with an urge to release tension

you are relieving that urge

wouldnt know if it releases dopamine

dopamine increasing meds usually make tics worse

You could be on to something, when I'm hyper, I'm always in a happy mood. I wouldn't say manic because it's not self destructive. But I've never been hyper and sad/angry.

Re: Dopamine releasing tick?

@Zevispaz, I've noticed this with me as well. On the rare occasion when I feel this way I'm really upbeat, energetic, attentive and quick-witted. Like I'm "all here" without any meds. Like all the planets are aligned and my brain chemicals and neurotransmitters are fully functional like they should be.

This usually only lasts for about one day, and I almost always end up with a migraine as I return to the fog. I've sort of become "afraid to be happy" as a result of this, because of the comedown headache.

*Light bulb over head*

I never thought about it being ADHD related (of course, I didn't really know I had ADHD until recently). I was very prone to migraines when I was younger, and this particular phenomenon occurred quite regularly. Not as much anymore, and I don't get migraines as much either. Wow.
