Doctors are refusing to prescribe Adderall

I have been taking Adderall for 6 years with no negative side effects and very positive results. Before being prescribed the meds, I had a full psych evaluation with the conclusion that I was in the 99th percentile of adults with ADD and meds would be beneficial. I switched doctors (insurance changed) about 5 years ago with no problems, still prescribed the medication. This doctor retired and I have been to three new doctors that have the ability to prescribe and some prescribe to current patients but refuse to prescribe to new patients. I called in advance the last two times to be sure that the dr prescribes Adderall so I didn't waste a day off work and money for the appt. I have been told to look for a psychologist but I have called every single one in my area. They either don't prescribe, don't take my insurance or charge out of pocket ($300) then I can attempt to get my insurance to pay only part.

I am so frustrated. I take no other prescriptions, am very healthy, have absolutely nothing in my background to indicate drug abuse yet I am being refused the one drug that has changed my life.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I would suggest a call to your insurance company and asking for a list of providers in your area. Then start calling down that list looking for a doctor. This is assuming you have not done this yet.

A psychologist does not prescribe medication. Is it possible to get your old records from the doctor that did prescribe you adderall. I would think that having documentation that you had been prescribed adderall before would he helpful to a new doctor. Were you able to actually see a doctor and have him /her say they don't prescribe adderall? Have you ever asked they doctor why he/she refuses to prescribe it? Sometimes calling an office to find out ahead of time what they prescribe can put some doctors off. Maybe if you can find a doctor further away you might have good luck?
