Whatever this policy is meant to do, it might be worth considering that it has a deterrent effect on users who aren't already strongly integrated into the forum community. Seems like the final effects are cliquish.
Yeah, I'd say this delay in being able to access the debate (which I've experienced recently, but not in this specific instance) is bad enough for established members, let alone the uninitiated. As strange as it might sound, someone might be compelled to hang onto the community just from the impression of a single, long, interesting debate. At least for a while. Well, I certainly hope you stick around, Hypoxia. I have a good feeling about you.

We really try not to be or encourage cliqueishness (speaking as a long-standing high activity member and former staff). I hope you stick around.

I second Abi, please stay!

Like I said in my post, be reassured, this is rare and not at all how it usually happens. The mods work very hard and are really great about this stuff!

Re: ADHD debates (private)

For those new to the forums, or unfamiliar with our procedures, here's some reference info straight from the ADDF Guidelines:

the [private forums] passwords are available from any Super Moderator.
Pro tip: You can find the names of the moderators and supermoderators for each subforum on the right-hand side of the main ADDF Index Page in green (moderators) and orange (supermoderators). Click the name, and you'll have the option to send them a private message.

Here's some background on why moderators sometimes move, edit, or close threads:
From the Guidelines' "FYI" section:

If your reply has nothing to do with the forum or the original thread please begin a new thread in a more appropriate forum. All posts within a thread should remain on topic or posts will be removed.
[...]
Deleting Posts and Closing Threads
* ADD Forums Administration has the right to close or remove any post or thread we deem inappropriate. The decision to Close or Delete a Post/Thread is solely ours. We have a strict policy of keeping the posts in this community constructive. Posts that create an unnecessary amount of conflict and serve no further purpose may be closed at the moderator’s discretion.
[...]
Thank you for reading through these guidelines. If you have any questions please go to the New User Help/Site Questions thread or contact a Moderator/Administrator for assistance.
From the ADDF Guidelines' "Please do NOT..." section:

* We have had issues arise here that have prevented this from happening - primarily members voicing their opinions about religious and political matters. While everyone is allowed their own opinions, there really is no other way to prevent such issues from "disturbing the peace", except to keep these things completely out of the ADD Forums in the first place.
There's a full list of those "prohibited topics" at the link above.

Please note: sometimes otherwise thoughtful / constructive posts are casualties of heated arguments or thread derailments, and end up being removed instead of edited or left intact. We try very hard to avoid doing this, but sometimes it's inevitable. It's not personal.

As TygerSan pointed out, the staff are all volunteers, most of whom also have ADHD+ and things on our minds and we aren't perfect.

If you've written something you're particularly invested in, and you're confident it doesn't violate guidelines, we can sometimes retrieve it for you and place it in a more appropriate place or adapt it to the edited thread.

From the same section:

(This applies to individual posts and publicly-viewable visitor messages as well.)

Remember that the staff are here to help. We don't enjoy acting like big meanies. But we are also charged with enforcing the guidelines that have been developed to foster and maintain an atmosphere that allows people of all ages and with a wide variety of perspectives to find support here.

The following applies to moderator and staff actions in general:

This doesn't mean that moderators are unaccountable for our actions, nor that we intervene in threads just to frustrate people! (Believe me, it's frustrating for us, too.)

Please do feel free to contact any moderator or supermoderator directly via PM if you have a question about why a post or thread was moved, edited, deleted, closed, etc. Hopefully that will clear up most of the concerns.

If you feel that the moderators have truly wronged you or acted inappropriately, please contact the ADDF Administrators, Andi, and Andrew, who take such concerns very seriously.

Happy posting!

Re: ADHD debates (private)

So, are you (or the mod who moved the thread) going to share with us why this particular thread was moved to debates well after a heated argument had been cleared and at a stage when we seemed to be finally having a reasonable and civil discussion?

Not necessarily. You can contact the Moderator or Supermoderator for your answer

The answer is No on the public forum. We don't discuss moderator actions on the public forum.

Re: ADHD debates (private)

What Greyhound said.

If you have questions about moderation, direct your questions to a moderator via private message.

If you have complaints related to moderation/moderators, please direct them to Andi and Andrew.

Fuzzy12, on that note, please check your messages.

In general, threads which take political or religious turns may be closed altogether or moved to debates because discussion of these topics tends to push buttons, and the forum strives to accommodate and support people of differing religions and political persuasions.
