what do you do when feeling sad?

Hey,

what do you do when you are feeling sad, to support yourself?

Today I'm feeling like that, but want to do something genuinely constructive to support myself for once, like connecting on here, for example ...

Look forward to hearing back from you

(I think I may have Inattentive ADD, but not yet received diagnosis - I also have Autism Spectrum Disorder).

Re: what do you do when feeling sad?

Write in a journal ... brutally honest ... I usually get clearer in doing that.

Talk to people ... and tell them how bad I feel ...

Sometimes I just get stuck on the internet (this is not a helpful strategy) ..

Walk in the beautiful cemetery nearby ... Somehow it calms me ....

Walk in a part of the city that I really like ...

Exercise ... (if I'm really on my game and can get myself into gear) ...

Meet with my therapist ...

Get ample sleep ...

I just eat apple and chocolates, sweet food makes me happy.
I also do watch animated film, something to cheer me up. Sometimes I play with my 2-year old cousin, her laugh is my kind of a happy pill.

Exercise helps me a lot
Riding my horse helps even more, having to focus that much breaks the negative thought cycle
Drive to your favorite bakery and get a slice of cake
Pet an animal (do you have a pet? I love my pet!)

Re: what do you do when feeling sad?

I used to try to distract myself in various ways, with varying degrees of success.

As of late, I'm experimenting with embracing the sadness, without chasing it (a mindfulness technique). Just looking at it objectively, as if I was an alien observing human emotions for the first time. What triggered it? What thoughts did I have or am I having related to that, and why? Are my thoughts helpful, or do they only make me more sad?

It sounds silly, but it does help reduce the intensity and duration of these emotions quite a bit.

Re: what do you do when feeling sad?

Music and believe it or not, recently, jumping jacks. I got the jumping jacks thing from a netflix show "OA". In the show its a quick bit but its basically hard to cry and be overcome by emotion when you are doing jumping jacks like you are flying. Sounds crazy but I did it last week and it ended up making me laugh.

Re: what do you do when feeling sad?

Some really sweet replies in this thread so far

I like:

- Walking in nature
- Swimming in the ocean (currently landlocked, uh, can't wait to go back to Florida)
- Getting lots of sunlight (vitamin D tablets can work OK too)
- Walking barefoot on the grass (some call this 'grounding')
- Going out (really takes my mind off things)

Put on some sad sentimental music and have a good cry.

Re: what do you do when feeling sad?

Yeah, I've got some good playlists for sad songs and just what I call my "comfy" songs.

Listening to these songs really does help me --I think it has something to do with I'm being compassionate with myself in listening to the music, which takes some of the edge off of the pain.

Take a super long bath and treat my hair to all kinds of masks and conditioners. Also, petting my dogs and hugging people. Going shopping with my mom can do wonders too.

I agree with this! Sitting still and simply saying to myself the word "sad" and embracing that for a few minutes (rather than trying to fight or run from it) can diffuse the feeling. It can also be helpful to look at a feelings word list or inventory to pinpoint more closely what the feeling is, and then, again, just embrace it.

In terms of self-soothing, running very warm water over my hands works wonders, for some reason.

And getting myself outside for a walk is always good.
