How do you know if its a sinus infection?

Sorry to blow up chit chat today.... I have had a head cold for about 3 weeks. All other symptoms are gone except my nose. Its never cleared up. Constantly running alternating between {gross sorry} clear-and alot- to gross colored and thick. I have tried every medication from the meth-sudafed- to all the other OTC ones including the homeopathic ones. Neti pot, flonase, other nasal sprays and saline spray. Even allergy meds, all kinds. I think I may have had a sinus infection once in my lifetime so does this sound like one? I already have an appt scheduled with my primary to check in about all the other stuff going on tomorrow morning which is good, but I wanted opinions. No real pain except when laying down (sleeping) and if you push on my cheeks. Also some swelling. No intense ear or head pain.

Re: How do you know if its a sinus infection?

I used to think (and was diagnosed by various docs and specialists for years on end) I was getting sinus infections (along with bronchitis, the flu bug, the tummy bug, major headaches, nausea, ongoing sniffles that were labeled "seasonal allergies", etc., etc.) several times each year during the winter months, especially, and tried every med under the sun, to no truly helpful avail.

Once I gave up meat, dairy, eggs, caffeine, alcohol, and most of that artificial stuff I used to love to devour, I haven't had anything nearly as severe, and many less instances of even the typical "cold" as we know it.

My body was apparently trying like hell to rid of the heavy mucus forming foods/beverages I was consuming, along with reacting in trying to protect me from the sea of artificial scents/colors/etc. that I was surrounding myself, cleaning with, doing laundry with, with and slathering on my body, all of which are absorbed into my largest organ, my skin.

It seems I spent less time "catching" illnesses, as I'd been taught my whole life, and more time consuming them. Go figure. Best wishes in figuring it out as it relates to your particular biology and may you feel better soon.

Re: How do you know if its a sinus infection?

I hear and respect you and if I had reoccurring instances of the mucus stuff or all that jazz I would consider what you do more carefully or at least look into it. I am 100% certain I got a nasty cold that isnt clearing up. I am not prone to sinus infections only ever had 1. I tend to get bronchial stuff. Just wanted opinions on what sinus infections tend to look like or behave like when its something beyond the common cold. I have some dried tumeric root I keep in the fridge for joint issues so I have been grinding (more like shredding) that up into tea for the sinus pain and it does seem to help with the inflammation. Either that or its placebo and I am crazy. I am a die hard neti pot fan and saline flush fan so we will see.

Re: How do you know if its a sinus infection?

Sinus infections can hold on a long time, and they do not respond to antibiotics.

I’m surprised the vasoconstrictive properties of your ADHD meds aren’t shrinking tissues to allow for better drainage.

Oops, forgot you are a smoker. Nevermind.

Good Luck,
Ian

Im sure I am being oversensitive but please tell me you meant this as a real afterthought and not some jab at my weakness. I hate the fact that Ive managed to quit drinking and other goods but still smoke, and I feel so weak and coward like that I havent stopped. Currently trying to vape so now at night I do not smoke cigarettes but I just cant seem to kick the habit completely. (I know I am being oversensitive but I had to ask because of it)

Re: How do you know if its a sinus infection?

For what it's worth, I've never smoked a cigarette in my life and my ADHD meds still have done squat to allow me to breathe when I've had allergy/cold/sinus issues. (Of course, that wasn't their job, either.)

Sarah, hope you're feeling better (less drippy/stuffy) soon!

Re: How do you know if its a sinus infection?

It sounds like it could be a sinus thing, especially with pain in the face;
and especially if it hasn't shifted to more of a respitory infection
(which often happens when I get a cold, I also I smoke and I totally understand)

Try hot water, lemon juice and thyme honey also works very well.

Re: How do you know if its a sinus infection?

One thing to keep in mind with sinus stuff is that if you use the nasal sprays for a long time, they can cause rebound congestion. That means if you use for a while and then stop, it makes the congestion worse.

No jab Sarah, I wouldn't take a cheap shot, least of all toward you.

Heat a bag of raw rice in the micro. Probably best to put the rice in a sock. When it gets hot, lay down with the sock on your eyes and nose facial area and in a few minutes, your sinuses will pop. You can feel them open!

Never use anything to dry up what you want out of your body. Blow, blow, blow. It must come out.

Re: How do you know if its a sinus infection?

Pain or swelling in the sinus area, in combination of green or tan/brown discoloring of the mucus tend to mean infection. Missy is right...blow, blow, blow...gently. Hot or warm compression can help with the pain and open the sinuses for relief and to help rid you of the infection. Hot showers can help as well...let the snot run

I tend to use vicks with a hot rag and heating pad to break it up. Note that Zinc has been tied to reducing the length and severity of a cold.

I'm confused by the mention that antibiotics don't work on a sinus infection. When my infection has been bad or won't go away that's the first thing they prescribe.

I hope you feel better soon.

Re: How do you know if its a sinus infection?

Well it is a sinus infection. Got the zpack and asked for diflucan just in case. Was offered prednisone but declined because steroids arent good for my stomach or me(make me very agitated) and I can live with the pain for now. Its good to know its an option if its doesnt improve. Why add one more med to my arsenol.

Perfusion of antibiotic through the nasal tissues and mucosa is very poor, so the outcome of an antibiotic regimen is typically poor, yet with all of the negative consequences of systemic treatment, e.g., disruption of gut flora, vaginal flora, and so on.

Outcome varies per person I suppose, and some fare better than others. My doctor won’t write a prescription for antibiotics for a sinus infection because he sees the risks and consequences as outweighing the potential benefit.

Cheers,
Ian

My doc is conservative with antibiotics as well. Especially if you are prone to certain types of infections. I was going through a period where i was constantly getting UTI's so rather than another antibiotic she referred me out to a urologist. Some small dietary changes and so far so good. This is only the second sinus infection I have had in my life which is why I think she decided on one. And the fact that its been 3.5 weeks which is kind of long for a head cold. She said the inside of my nose looked awful and the back of my throat from the drainage was bad too.
