Re: What was high school like for you?

1. What "clique(s)" did you belong to?
  • The few kids who were good at sports like myself, and always hung around with the 'bad' kids as they didn't care what I was like, they just thought I was like them.
2. what classes did you enjoy?
  • Gym class, Tech and Science
3. what classes did you hate?
  • Maths, Spanish (although I've since learned Japanese), Cookery, and Religious Studies.
4. What grades did you get?
  • Appaling grades, passed gym with a distinction though...
5. If you graduated, what was your GPA?
  • We don't have a GPA sytem in the UK, you 'graduate' automatically when you reach a certain age. You could basically sit there doing nothing for five years and still be allowed to move on to college.
6. If you dropped out, why?
  • My behaviour got too much to handle. I was too aggressive, too violent and too big to be dealt with in the normal channels. I was charged with a criminal offence aged 13 after a fight with another boy at school (it was a bad fight - lots of damage) and sent to a specialist unit (juvenile prison bascally).
7. How did you manage the massive amount of homework?
  • I didn't. My homework 'diary' got left in my locker, and there wasn't any homework set from the tutor at Juvie.
It's not all bad though, I did some vocational training when I was a bit older and qualified as a mechanical engineer. Then I did a college course to gain a HND in Engineering and later went on to university and attained a Degree.

I just wasn't ready for school when I was a kid - all I was interested in was running about and goofing off.

39 for me... but I'm a young 39. heh.
I suspected when I was 29, though... but before that, I had no idea.

Some questions:
1. What "clique(s)" did you belong to?
I'm not sure that "the geeks" is considered a clique, but I suppose it could be.

2. what classes did you enjoy?
Math and Science... I liked having a definite answer to work towards, and a piecewise methodology to work on to get there. Thinking back, it was similar to how doctors have counseled ADD sufferers... split up a task into smaller tasks, and concentrate on each one in turn, and you will get the task done easier. The step-by-step of the scientific method, and using mathematical formulas really helped this way.

3. what classes did you hate?
PE and English. I hated physical activity (even though I remained quite thin), and English class was boring.

4. What grades did you get?
Mid-C's overall. Math and Science were much better, but my boring classes brought me down.

5. If you graduated, what was your GPA?
No idea. We didn't use GPAs where I lived. Average was, again, mid-C's.

7. How did you manage the massive amount of homework?
I forced myself to do it, but I'm guessing that there's a lot more homework these days than there was when I went to highschool. One big help was doing my homework in front of the TV, or having music playing. That extra element in the mix allowed that distracted part of my brain to focus on that, while the rest worked on the homework. Interestingly enough, this is how I described it to everyone who thought it was weird that I could study and do homework with the distractions, but noone ever mentioned ADD to me.

Re: What was high school like for you?

I'll answer your questions. Not that I think anyone will read this, but as most people I like talking about myself. So here I go:

I was diagnosed a year ago.

1. What "clique(s)" did you belong to?
The unpopular kids, however I wasn't disliked by anyone. I did get bullied for a year when I was in 9th grade. I was an easy victim then because my OCD kicked in. One year later I dealt with the bully and the bullying pretty much stopped. It stopped completely when I started "romancing" the hottest chick in the school. Later it turned out the bully didn't like me because he thought I was gay (classic case of a frustrated closet-gay.)

2. what classes did you enjoy?
History. The guy teaching it was a smart guy. He knew I was a smart guy. I even tricked him at an exam, letting him answer all the questions for me. At the end he realized what i had been doing but we were out of time. He gave me an A. Funny guy. All the other teachers hated me. I was a incredibly frustrated kid, seemingly only capable of making skeptical and cynic remarks.

3. what classes did you hate?
All boring classes.

4. What grades did you get?
I barely passed. I never studied, yet I always passed. Teachers were really frustrated by this, because they were sure I would be an A student f I just studied. Little did they know I didn't studied because I just didn't know how to do it.

5. If you graduated, what was your GPA?

We don't have a GPA here.

6. If you dropped out, why?
I didn't.

7. How did you manage the massive amount of homework?
I didn't do homework. If i did I copied from a girl or made it quickly 5 minutes before the class started. My grades on homework were really low which made it harder to pass at the end of the year.

Re: What was high school like for you?

1. What "clique(s)" did you belong to?
Got along with everyone, but i guess you could say i hung out with the stoners and 'jocks' mostly, dodgy combo i know.

2. what classes did you enjoy?
Didn't really enjoy any classes mainly because nothing was coming in anyway, i didn't mind english, dutch and sports as much as other classes though.

3. what classes did you hate?
Math/geometry/algebra, i had no idea what the hell was going on most of the time.

4. What grades did you get?
Always the bare minimum to pass through the first couple of years.

5. If you graduated, what was your GPA?
n/a

6. If you dropped out, why?
Mentally flunked out after three years, eventhough i stayed in school on paper so i could inn the cash every month, i basicly stopped going to school because i couldn't get myself to concentrate or work for it.

7. How did you manage the massive amount of homework?
I didn't, the first three years were easy enough to get through without doing anything, after that it turned to ****.

Re: What was high school like for you?

I did not graduate cause I failed 2 grades and said screw it. It was horrible cause no matter how hard I tried I just couldnt do it. I was a skater so thats who I hung out with. my GPA was .70 although since then I have gotten 4 diplomas adn am not using any of them lol. My favorite classs was art and got A's in it, I hated everything else. Homework was not good cause like school nothing would sink in, I would read but nothing registered in my brain so I had alot of migraines and finally pulled the plug and went to work when I turned 16.

I'm enjoying reading other people's responses. It's interesting to kinda see inside someone else's memories that are totally different from mine.

One of my favorite teachers was a history teacher who taught history the right way -- told it as a lot of really interesting/crazy/funny stories about what's happened in the past, which is what it is. So sad how many teachers make it boring!

Ah, now, I never cheated. One, I'm physically unable to break rules like that -- I think I might actually split in half or something. My body & mind would reject the attempt. Two, I was always too arrogant to believe that someone else might have a better answer than me.

Re: What was high school like for you?

I wasn't diagnosed until this year...32 years old.

1. What "clique(s)" did you belong to?
Clique? I wasn't really in a clique...I was a Jock, an artist, and the bad kids liked me a lot. lol

2. what classes did you enjoy?
I loved PE, and English well the literature part, computer class and art class

3. what classes did you hate?
I hated Math, Chemistry, except for labs.

4. What grades did you get?
My grades were never consistent. except in PE and in Computer, everything else ranged from low D to High B. . . usually lower when I wasn't participating or preppiing to play a sport.

5. If you graduated, what was your GPA?
Graduated 2.5

6. If you dropped out, why?
nope

7. How did you manage the massive amount of homework?

that was why my grades were never consistant. Sometimes I did it, sometimes I didn't...I loved art, but rarely finished my weekly art pad practise assignments. For the most part what I didn't finish in class or study hall (when I was a lunch monitor), or doing lunch before the class, or before a game/track meet, it didn't get done.

Me too! I am like a tree, I like to 'plant' myself and not move. The only 'moving' I like to do is mental.

I agree! So much truth to that concept... almost like remembering something we never knew in the first place.

Re: What was high school like for you?

Some questions:
1. What "clique(s)" did you belong to? i had a couple of friends I think we were the ones that were not in any of the cliques
2. what classes did you enjoy? art, history and english
3. what classes did you hate? gym math - it was boring Zzzzzzz
4. What grades did you get? B -C
5. If you graduated, what was your GPA? I have no clue but i know it was not good
6. If you dropped out, why?
7. How did you manage the massive amount of homework? easy . we barley had any home work. I attended a vocational school and was supposed to go out and find a job but instead I went to college - funny i rebelled here I guess LOL. I had tons of homework in college and did ooh just ok not great.before beign diagnosed.

Later , as a n adult when I went back to college for the second time, I was super organized and managed a B average. I loved school and worked hard to keep a schedule that allowed me the time I needed to study.

Re: What was high school like for you?

1. What "clique(s)" did you belong to?
I like to say that i'm friends with most types of people. I love hanging out with anyone but if I had to classify what group was my favorite, it'd probably be the stoners partly because I am the stoner of my HS. I've been high at school constantly sense 8th grade. I did have a lot of really good friends though and some really close friends that i'd do anything for.

2. what classes did you enjoy?
I didn't enjoy a class per-say but I enjoyed teachers. I think my favorite class was probably PE, I had a lot of fun in creative writing and government. Partly because the teachers were awesome, knew what they were doing and could help me, yet challenge me at the same time with out pushing me to the "eff it" limit.

3. what classes did you hate?
I didn't really enjoy algebra at the beginning because I got behind and didn't really pay attention and I got to the point where I didn't really show up for class until he basically sat me down and some how encouraged me to do my **** and I actually did my work. My world studies teachers, however, just left me behind, probably because of the class size and how much of an ******* I was to them.

4. What grades did you get?
I've gotten them from A's to F's. I get all around "okay" grades and i mean okay by Cs if I can. For classes that I enjoy I don't accept anything lower than a B. For classes that I hated I tried for a C but often got a D or an F.

5. If you graduated, what was your GPA?
n/a

6. If you dropped out, why?
I haven't yet.

7. How did you manage the massive amount of homework?
By not doing it unless I enjoyed the class.

Re: What was high school like for you?

Diagnosed at 20 as well.

Some questions:
1. What "clique(s)" did you belong to?

None or all, depending. I was pack leader for 1st VX rugby and basketball captain, but also did the maths olympiad nd was in a wind band. Stoners bored me if I spent too much time with them. Was friendly with most. English schools are very different to US ones though, it seems.

2. what classes did you enjoy?

Most of them. I like learning, dislike repetition, and managed to minimise the latter.
3. what classes did you hate?

None. There was a friend I had called sleep.
4. What grades did you get?

Homework? didn't really do much.

5. If you graduated, what was your GPA?
Don't have GPAs here, but got all As at a level (like APs)

6. If you dropped out, why?
Didn't.

7. How did you manage the massive amount of homework?
Didn't.

Hit uni and that pretty house of cards collapsed. Have to produce the material at the end of the day, and that requires sustained effort. Getting better, slowly.

Re: What was high school like for you?

1. What "clique(s)" did you belong to?

None, really. I just kind of kept to myself when I could, and just talked with whoever I was around during class. I've never been highly social.

2. what classes did you enjoy?

Math and Electronics, which was based on lots of math. I love math. I like the challenge of figuring out the problem and how to solve it, and that there is pretty much always a black and white, right or wrong, answer. I guess I like the order of it.

3. what classes did you hate?

History. I hated any type of history. It happened, it's done, let's move on.

4. What grades did you get?

All A's, except one stinking B because the advanced Geometry class was full so they bumped me to the advanced Algebra 2 class, which was largely based on Geometry. I was behind from the start, and eventually had to go to the regular Algebra 2 class because the advanced was too much of a gap for me to bridge that quickly without the foundation in Geometry, so I managed a B, instead of my usual A.

5. If you graduated, what was your GPA?

I was the salutatorian, and I believe my GPA was 3.96 because of my one B.

6. If you dropped out, why?

N/A

7. How did you manage the massive amount of homework?

I did all of my homework in some class or right before school started. I never did it at home, unless it was a project that I had to do at home. I thrived on the procrastinating and pressure of having to work quickly under fire to get things done right under the gun. Rarely did I take books home for anything. I listened in class, and learned that way. I hate to read anyway.

I never went to college. I had offers of scholarships to schools ranging from Duke to Florida State to small colleges. The Speed Engineering School at the University of Louisville was my likely destination if I went to college, but I was bored with school and didn't go any farther. I do regret not going to college, but at the same time, I kind of think that I would have been exposed there and that my natural intelligence wouldn't have carried me through. I would have really struggled, at least I think. I'm not a reader, and I don't think you can just pay attention and hyperfocus on what the teacher says and get everything that you need to get in college. Yeah, I know it is weird that I could pay attention so well in school, but it was just my way of compensating. I got kind of obsessed after nearly failing in the third grade, and was determined not to let that happen again. It became a compensation for me to make sure that I was focused on whoever was speaking so that I didn't have to read.
