Re: I am a little worried
So we had conferences tonight. She is at a reading and comprehension level of a kindy kid. She is in the first grade. No surprises there. And her teacher recommended getting her evaluated for an IEP, which I was all for. While I don't want her to be "labeled" so young, I want her to get the services that she needs to succeed. The reading resource program can only accept 4 kids per semester right now, and that is for the whole school...about 525 kids total. So I am hoping that the having an IEP will help.
Basically, the teacher told me that I have a six year old that is a perfectionist, and rather slow at motivating herself to end tasks and transition to new ones. But she seemed receptive to any new information that I could give. And she was unaware of her previous speech delay that got her into early intervention preschool, which could be a contributing factor to her additional language arts delay. Overall what I expected from conferences, though I was unable to speak to the resource teacher as she had left by my conference time. I just wish there was some way to keep me from crying inside when my beautiful girl tells me that she can't wait for baseball or soccer to start again, because you can be great there without being able to read in front of others. She is amazing...but I want her to be able to read that she is amazing as well, and understand. Sigh |

Re: I am a little worried
When working with the school for accommodations, do not overlook simple ones like "not having to read out loud in front of the class"!. She could practice with a caring resource teacher instead.
My youngest has dysgraphia and dyslexia with her ADHD and the school IEP had provided a modified curriculum and additional help (so far through the 8th grade). She is mostly caught up and needs little of the help at this time. In the 4th grade, she could not finish a timed math test in the allotted 4 minutes (although every problem she completed was correct) and you have to take them until you pass, or never move forward in math (this was stupid). I asked (and the principal backed me on this) to have the tests untimed and then halted. My daughter is brilliant at solving complex math problems and did not need to have a timed test prevent her from progressing. She can now do all the basic math that was on those timed tests in her head now. |
