had my first appointment today.

Hey guys

Ok I just took an Ambien but I thought I should still write this down while it is still fresh in my mind. I had my first appointment with a Psychiatrist today and gotta say, it went better than expected. I have no idea what I was anxious about honestly. The psych spotted ADD virtually immediately and started writing a prescription for Adderal 20mg x 2/day, especially when I mentioned the more serious of the symptoms. I had no idea what he was doing and just continued listing my symptoms which just convinced him even more that ADD was the correct diagnosis. He even said that I should talk to my brother since some of the behavior that he exhibits( when i described it) matches an ADD diagnosis.

Anyways, the Ambien just kicked in, I just wanted to let the people know that they should never be anxious about seeing a specialist, and if somebody thinks that they have ADD they should probably make an appointment.

Anyways, Ill elaborate a bit more tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help.

Hmm, I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not ,but by ADD I mean attention deficit without hyperactivity.

Re: had my first appointment today.

this is a very nice message to those not sure about seeing a psychiatrist and getting diagnosed. thanks for posting it. you're right, there is nothing to be scared of; you talk about what is wrong and they listen. some are better than others and you might not always end up with an add/adhd diagnosis but they don't bite!

i've been seeing psychiatrists since 2003 and currently have a great one, but this message could be very useful for first-timers.

Re: had my first appointment today.

Yeah, the Pdoc I picked actually seemed really nice, albeit a bit detached.(almost inatentive ) He took a rather extensive family history, to see if there was a pattern of ADD and actually at the end he said that whenever I feel ready I should discuss my symptoms/treatment with certain family members who have exhibited certain symptoms, because not being on medication for this condition is like trying to play the piano with one hand. It actually seems like he cares about his patients and wasn't just trying to give me a script and send me on your way.

I was a little intimidated when I first walked and was basically asked what's wrong. It seemed rather difficult to try to explain like 10 years living with this condition in 10 minutes, but he caught on quickly what I was aiming at and eventually he started asking questions himself.

Today is my first full day on Adderall I took a 10mg (cut the 20mg in half) around 9 and then the other 10mg around 11:30. It is a huge difference and the only major side effect is the loss of appetite ( I basically have to force myself to eat something) and dry mouth (but I drink a lot of water anyway so its actually not that bad). No jitters, no euphoria, no rapid heartbeat, just some minor sweating and of course an improved attention span.

Glad your appointment went well!

I got nervous because a little bit of me was scared that this still wasn't the end of the road.

Re: had my first appointment today.

Glad to hear it went well. I've been on the boat about going to talk to someone about this, but maybe I'll use this as encouragement. Im really touchy about when others talk about me and I would be heartbroken to hear that what I think is wrong with me isn't really what I think it is.
