Re: Adult ADHD Assessment Centres in UK

Heres a few, don't know how good they are. I haven't got the contact details but they should be readily available by ringing the associated NHS trust. They're mostly paediatric or child and adolescent but some of them will see adults for ADHD. The Adult psychiatrists are nearer the bottom.

Prof Asherson mentioned in the above post runs a national NHS clinic so he can be referred to from anywhere in the country. This means funding by the PCT "shouldn't" be a problem. Hes still there

Re: Adult and Child ADHD Assessment Centres in UK

launter I try to keep up with directories for providers who will evaluate and treat ADD, although primarily interested in adults I do have need of some for children in your area. I am going to post a hyperlink back to this post plus I may copy and paste the resources for adults so I can post it in this section for our members. It allows me to simply hyperlink to one general area when people come-on and ask where to find doctors who will treat ADD.

Hi Alanna, thought this might interest you... I rang a suppport group asking them for advice on this and they tell me that there is only 2 specialist units for adult ADHD in the U.K. One of them which is nearest myself is The Maudsley Hospital in South London and the other was in the North somewhere but sorry I can't remember details of this one, the support group I called was A.D.D.I.S, they are a registered charity and they are based in Edgware, postcode HA8 7BJ. They were very helpful and said the best route is to get your doctor to refer you to a psychiatrist and then ask the psychiatrist to refer you to one of theese two specialist centres. I am currently awaiting my psychiatrist appointment and hope to gain a referral to The Maudsley adult ADHD unit. These two units they seem to refer to as the most capable of dealing with all the unique aspects of adult ADHD. Em

Hi. With due respect, Addiss are a bit out of date with their information. I'll ring them this week and make them aware of the newer clinics.

Do have a good look in some of the other UK threads, as there are now more than two NHS Adult ADHD clinics in the UK, and a small number of PCTs have consultant psychiatrists whose special interests include Adult ADHD. As well as the two in Cambridge and South London, there are now NHS clinics in Bristol, Swansea, and possibly Leicester (I only heard a rumour about this one, so if anyone in the know can confirm, that'd be great.)

It can be difficult to keep up with the progress, but there is definitely progress being made. Granted, this is not nearly enough, but it's a start and a good reason not to lose hope.

Stay positive and keep going. I went through the process myself, and it took over a year, so I speak from experience. I got diagnosed at Cambridge nearly three years ago.

There are also private clinics mentioned in these threads, and not all of them are as expensive as you might think. Some may even take NHS referrals. Shop around.

Re: Adult and Child ADHD Assessment Centres in UK

The Bristol Clinic is indeed up and running. You do not need to be referred by a psychiatrist to this clinic. A GP can request the referral, and only needs to write a simple letter giving some rationale for the referral. The letter does not need to be elaborate.

If you live outside the Bristol area, you will need to get funding from your PCT for the referral, the waiting list is about 2 months for those outside Bristol.

And if your PCT gets difficult, you can always ask your MP to help "persuade" them to do the right thing!

Good luck!

Re: Adult and Child ADHD Assessment Centres in UK

please help. if need be, i am willing to pay or private care. that said, i'd obviously accept help from the NHS.

i have been diagonsed with adult ADHD since i was about 24. i am from the US. thankfully my 1st GP in the UK understod my diagnosis and gave me a functional treatment plan. once i had a baby everyone assumed that they didn't need to address the whole adhd thing. i feel lost, confused, frustrated, and a failure. i really need another doctor to advise. i'm instirling, scotland...any ideas for doctors?

thank you

Re: Adult and Child ADHD Assessment Centres in UK

im struggling too in st albans, ive been trying to get to see someone on the list here 20miles away for 3 weeks but cant seem to get very far so was trying to find someone else, ive made a few phone calls and been pased from clinic to clinic, but lack of energy and anxiety overtakes me.

theres a guy in st albans who does child adhd so i rang the clinic and they sugested another doctor but they were on holiday, but they couldnt tell me much about them.

i keep asking if theres some way of finding clincians private or nhs who have the ability to treat adhd, but it just simply seems to be word of mouth, so far only through adhd support groups.

my GP just shrugs his sghoulders when i ask if he can find someone, even private, nhs ones are so few.

I cant beleive there isnt a directory of some kind, but al there seems to be is a list of doctors names etc with no details.

makes me wonder how these people get their business, maybe its just random.

it cant be acceptable, surly something could be done. google throws up too many usless hits to help much.

but basically for your gp to prescribe the medication you would most likely need a psychiatrist to recomend that treatment. your lucky if you find a gp that would be confident enough to do so othwerise, but your diagnosis from the US should still count, and if it doesnt it should be enough for refereal to nhs sppecialist clinic but i only know 3 in england.

so far the only adhd clinciians who have treated me have previously practiced mostly in america, and ive heard about from other patients.

I've read an NHS report called "ADHD Services over Scotland" dated March 2007. On page 17 it says

"there are no dedicated services for adults with ADHD in Scotland, although two NHS board areas do have adult
psychiatrists with a special interest and some of the other NHS boards reported emerging interest within adult psychiatry and general practice."

Looking through the remainder of the document it seems that the following areas in Scotland have an interest in adult adhd:

NHS Borders
NHS Dumfries & Galloway
NHS Fife (a consultant psychiatrist in Levenmouth is planning an adult service, March 2007)
NHS Forth Valley
NHS Tayside

Note that this report is a year old so it's possible that the situation may have improved somewhat.

Re: Adult and Child ADHD Assessment Centres in UK

Sorry, adhdjustme, I forgot to add to my previous post that since you live in Stirling, you may be fairly lucky because the report says that "NHS Forth Valley reported that some adult psychiatrists have expressed an interest in, and are seeing, new adult referrals for assessment of ADHD."

The report does not list who these specialists are, so you may want to ask your GP to find out and refer you to one of them.

Hi Alanna,

My name is Martin and I have just joined the forum.

I noticed that you mention in recent threads that you have located a specialist adult ADD therapist in Stockport or Altrincham??

I'm based in Manchester... am looking for the same and wondered if you could help by passing on the details.

It's recently come to my attention (in between being distracted) that I suffer from ADD and have struggled to find anybody who can help in my neck of the woods.

Hope you can...

Mx

Re: Adult and Child ADHD Assessment Centres in UK

I am glad there is more facilities becoming available. I am still trying to get a referral and finally have a date to see a psychiatrist for initial asessment. However even getting this was not easy. Firstly I was told that I could not be treated for ADHD on the NHS after my doctor attempted to refer me (they wouldn't even see me for an initial assessment.) Then my doctor referred me straight to ADHD clinic and then they told me I had to of been referred from a tertiary source?? So I have been re referred, possibly in another way by my doctor to the local psychiatry services. Now all I need is for them to turn round and tell me they wont refer me. I can understand why people feel like giving up and why this is so frustrating. Hopefully the psychologist/psychiatrist will be knowledgable enough and give me the referral I need. Or perhaps they will decide that I have depression and not ADD.

Following all this up and chasing and asking is not easy either when you have ADD. so just adds to the stress levels.
