Visiting a Psychiatrist after 7 years this week.

From age 9 I was diagnosed with ADD and Depression.

From 1999 to 2000 when I was age 15-16 I was prescribed Dexedrine. Then in 2000 I was put into group therapy. They had their own set of psychiatrists which took me off of Dexedrine and kept moving me back and forth between various medications. They felt Dexedrene was a bad drug for me even though it helped with almost every problem I had. So Depakote at the time was their drug of choice and was on that for about 2 years. I always asked my psychiatrist about other options but my dosage for Depakote was always just increased. So I eventually turned 18 and decided to just stop taking medications altogether which caused more problems.

Ok, so I haven't been on any medications and long story short I haven't done anything with my life either. I graduated High School and that was about it. Everytime I attempted school, I could never concentrate long enough on it. I just end up making a huge list of what I am going to do and never to do. I feel overwhelmed most of the time. I have had several part-time jobs but they come and go feels like it just gets too hard.

So that is my basic cliff notes. Which leads me to my question. I am visiting a new psychiatrist this coming week. Should I go about explaining her my situation in the form I just described? I know I don't wan to go in clueless because I am not but I want to make sure I don't get run around with all new drugs they have come out with. I especially don't want to be put back on Depakote. I really feel like dexedrene along with therapy had me on the right track but then I got derailed. I have read through these forums and saw people are very knowledgeable about how to bring up questions with psychiatrists, so any advice would be great.

During my time on Dexedrene (1999/2000) I felt great. My deperession was gone, I was social, I could concentrate in school and my family enjoyed being around me. But when I was moved to Depakote it was the complete opposite. I never understood their reason putting me Depakote but I feel like I have lost 7 years of life just because of it.

Weird, my scant understanding is that depakote (valproic acid) is rarely used for depression. I'd be confused if I were you too, I thought it was an anti-convulsant and mood stabilizer? Also sometimes it gets used for schizophrenia and more often, bipolar disorder?

So did your doctors say they didn't agree with the previous diagnosis of ADHD, maybe?

Well anyways, I think how you explained it was very clear. Getting back on the drug depends what the side effects of dex were though, if it was a potentially dangerous cardiovascular side effect or irregularity, or if you had super high cholesterol and still do, then they're not likely to put you back on (I wouldn't think).

But I think, just from the info available, you've got a pretty good case to be put on a dextroamphetamine again.

I'm not a professional or anything like that though.
