Re: Driving Anxiety

My pdoc told me that if you let anxiety stop you from driving the worse it gets. I try to do it any way.

I don't see why it should get worse. Many people have structured their life around avoiding driving: living near a bus stop and living near shopping. If you live somewhere where there's nothing to walk to and no transit to speak of, then giving up driving is a real problem, and can lead to isolation. I'm not advocating giving up driving, just that it is possible to live without it, if you restructure your life.

Re: Driving Anxiety

Anytime I have to drive more then 45 min I get anxious, I have SCT and during rush hour one needs to be quick on the freeways. I can no longer be picky choosing jobs that I can get to by taking a side road so this has become a major issue. Meds make it easier to concentrate but it just stresses me out! We took a road trip a week ago and gosh...I had to drive 2hrs before stopping, it was insane!

Oh...and did I mention that I always get lost? Yeah...I feel safer in a familiar area or when there's no traffic on the interstate.

Re: Driving Anxiety

The GPS helps me not get lost so much, but I'm always afraid I'm going to lose signal, or it's going to show me a really stupid way to go.

I'm fine driving places I go frequently. I really dislike driving places I don't know at all.

Re: Driving Anxiety

Driving anxiety isn't something that can have a "magic cure" - the only cure is learning and driving experience.

Everything you do in your life is a risk. People say "It's even a risk to get out of bed in the morning" - but they forget to say that staying in bed is actually a risk too.

If you want to overcome driving anxiety, the process has to include a lot of repetitions of the kind of driving that was making you anxious. Easy trips on side roads don't help, unless that really was the anxiety-producing kind.

But another part of the process is learning. If you have an impatient person "helping" you, that can make your learning difficult.

Re: Driving Anxiety

im a good driver when there's nobodyelse on the road. that tells you about my driving enough i feel.

i dont like driving around people. i just feel uneasy about it. my main problem tho is gauging where i am relative to the lanes, that's a bad one of mine, if feel i devote more mental power while driving to that alone. more than i should. the worst thing is i need to learn to not just have mini panic attacks every time i drive and get over it cuz it's a skill of life everybody needs to know.

Repetition of the anxiety-producing type of driving sometimes doesn't help? Good point. However, it does help sometimes - and avoiding the repetitions never succeeds.

I have found that when the repetition stops the anxiety can come back. Sometimes not always
