Adderall dose put way up...

Hi there, I haven't been on for a while. I decided that I was spending WAY to much money each month on meds (adderall, effexor and ambien) and not feeling well enough to justify it. I don't mind spending alot if I feel great but that wasn't the case. I went to see a psychiatrist for the first time, I had been diagnosed by my GP and when it came to having to try different meds and dosages he wasn't as comfortable or up to date and recommended I see someone else.

I have never seen a psych but I went for a med consult. I had no idea if I would go in and spend time with him and he would tell me I didn't even have ADD. I started weaning myself off effexor xr weeks ago (all who have been there know that it is hell on earth) I am now down to breaking 37.5mg capsules in half and will continue with smaller doses until I am finally free of it. (HATE IT). My psych told me that I needed much more adderall than I am currently on but agree's that effexor is unnecessary for now. He prescibed adderall 30mg in the morning and again in the afternoon. For now we are not doing the xr but he said I may need to go up to 80mg per day. (40mg am +40mg pm). In the past the most I have taken is 30mg a day - I thought that was a top dose. I guess I am optimistic again that maybe I will get to a good level that I can function. When I was first diagnosed in June I thought meds would really help both with the fatigue and fog but it really didn't. I now am only going to take the adderall and go from there. He had 4 different scenerio's of possible things we could try. Concerta and adderall, provigil and adderall (I have tried provigil in the past and it didn't do much to clear my mind although I wasn't quite as tired) and a few other things. I was glad that I went to see him because my GP kind of had me feeling like I was at the end of my options.

I have searched posts and seen that others do take a higher dose than I was taking to I guess it is normal but I will let you know how it goes.

Lucky you, my doctor doesn't give me more than 40mg a day, and I suffer everyday from my symtoms, not to include the anxiety I get every night.

I take 40 mg twice a day. Origonaly I was put on 20mg twice, and it didnt touch me. Just depends on the person.
T-Bass- Maybe you should try another doctor? Theres no reason you should be still suffering when it could be taken care of with the proper doctor.

Some people do need more than others. GPs will often have quams about exceeding the daily recommended dose for fears about liability and lack of experience with a particular drug. A Pdoc will have a lot more experience with ADHD than your GP, I would hope, and so will have more experience prescribing. As long as you are OK with side effects and BP and all that, I wouldn't worry about the dose being high, as long as you are getting the effect that you want for your ADHD.
GP's also won't have experience with all of the other treatment options if the most common one doesn't work - this would be true of any condition that he doesn't see very often, which is why there are specialists - it isn't possible for your GP to know everything. Doctors don't like taking risks, so often they take very conservative approaches to treatment, especially for something like ADHD which isn't life threatening.

Took me 28 years to go to a doctor, switching is probably harder than the first step. I have a very high tolerance to any med, I tell my doctor I self medicate, but seems it's ok, as long as I don't go over 40mg of Adderall.

I'm going to my dr. tomorrow for a physical and to discuss my meds. I've been on 30 mg of XR for 2 years (I think?), and last Dec. he thought I should start weaning off because I seemed to be doing better. Huh? Actually, I'd been thinking that even 30 wasn't enough. So I went along with it and have been taking 20mg since early Jan. Unbeknownst to me, I was sliding downhill in a very bad way. My DH mentioned to my dr. when he saw him a few weeks ago. No WONDER life has been hard again.

So now I have to tell him I've been taking 40mg/day for the past two weeks, and I'm still struggling. I just doubled up the 20's. Maybe I should take them separately? Maybe I should ask to switch to Concerta or something? He's a good dr. but pretty conservative w/meds, which in general, I think is a good thing. But he's not living with my brain, I am.

Re: Adderall dose put way up...

I am new to the forum. My 11 y/o daughter is on Amphetamine Salts (ADDERALL?) 10 mg a day. She has requested an increase to her meds. Is this uncommon? I am concerned that she may become depressed if she is not already.

She has been on the meds. for 4 years. She started at .5 mg only on school days and off in the summertime. Now she is on 10 mg seven days a week. I am considering 15mg. Her pediatrician said that titration is ok.

Can anyone give me their thoughts? I may also have untreated ADD.

Re: Adderall dose put way up...

Amphetamines can induce mania in those doses (40+mg/day). Be sure you are not bipolar or prone to schizophrenia. I lost a three year relationship when my now exgirlfreind was taking 60mg/day of Adderal combined with Prozac and was hospitalized after voices told her to crash her car. SSRI's potentaite the affects of amphetamines by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks them down (CYP2D6 too much wikipedia haha) causing toxicity.

You could throw in a D2 receptor antagonist to prevent mania, but thats a whole other topic.

Wow..sorry to hear that...yeah that is true...I am bipolar and take adderall up to 40-50mg/day and have a mood stabilizer and take wellbutrin which is an SNRI...but sometimes I do get scatterbrained bad and am not sure what causes that...any ideas?
