Diggin Earth

So a couple of years ago we bought a farm. It came with chickens and guineas, we added to the flock, lost many to predator but I'm just really getting back to my roots growing up on my grandparents farm. So in all this new to me now farm stuff I'm gardening again. And FAILING miserably. I have forgotten everything. Well...things grow in my garden but the weeds seem to thrive better and I'm just not able to keep up with pulling them. I'm thinking of all sorts of ways to be successful, reading books and what not. They tend to lean towards raised beds but that's an expense I'm not really wanting to dive into, heck, last year I just bought a tractor, rototiller and a plow. Spending more money on boxes and dirt...meh.

I have bought cloth which helped a little where I used it but that stuff gets expensive as well. I remember gram used straw but that didn't work for me either. Perhaps it wasn't thick enough. So, I'm hoping that I'm not the only person who is growing things...note organically, so no pesticides, etc. please. If you have tips and tricks I can employ, that would be wonderful.

Re: Diggin Earth

I'm not the right one to advise, Andi, plants tend to die when I try to grow them

Re: Diggin Earth

Andi raised beds are a cinch if you or your partner can use a drill. We used old wood from a fence and plywood, etc. I had this idea and it worked: lay down cardboard before you put the dirt in. Its porous and keeps the weeds down. We also got dirt delivered with organic material in it which helped. Our garden did great.
