Nightmare/terror side effects

hi,
I began taking concerta a few days ago. Well it has been amazing at night I am having trouble sleeping. When I do finally get to sleep I am having extreme nightmares that feel so real I can not separate them from sleeping and waking conscious. I now have to go to sleep with a TV going now to left my mind go to this place. Has this happened to anyone else and if yes how did they deal with it? Did it fade over time?

Re: Nightmare/terror side effects

hi dr nemesis,

welcome to the forums

i *have* had vivid dreams before (very few vivid nightmares), but i've never had that happen from adhd medication alone. are you taking anything else?

i know it's random, but i had them a couple of times a week for the whole time i took mefloquine (also called larium/lariam...however you spell it) as malaria prophylaxis. i don't know what other things, or things in combination can result in having vivid dreams... i've taken ritalin for several years, though, and never had them as a result of taking only the ritalin, which has the same active ingredient as concerta.

anyway, i know the dreams themselves can be so discombobulating (to say the least) and i hope you can identify the cause quickly. i really hated the 'is this dream or not?' feeling--especially given that is often was...and then would repeat. since yours are nightmares i encourage you to definitely call your doctor

best wishes to you

Re: Nightmare/terror side effects

I think it is because I have been taking a sleeping pill. Usually I feel like I am getting killed and I am aware of what is going on but as my body thinks I am asleep I can't move or get out of it. I am awake in my mind but asleep in my body. If that makes sense.

Re: Nightmare/terror side effects

Oh, happens to me too!
Happened last night, it's highly disturbing !
I read in some article online that Ritalin can cause nightmares.

It happened to me several times, especially when I was also stressed or troubled by something and it took me very long time to fall asleep.
Then I had horrible nightmares, really spooky stuff.
I am going to check this issue online, wonder whether it's a common side effect of the med.
I am on Ritalin IR.
It only happened to me since I started taking Ritalin IR.
Didn't happen while I was on Concerta / Ritalin LA, but Ritalin LA caused other horrible side effects.

Re: Nightmare/terror side effects

When I was prescribed Wellbutrin, this happened to me on the third night. Absolutely the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to me. Thought I was losing my grip on reality.

I threw the pills away and went back to Prozac.

Is the sleeping pill ambian by any chance? I was prescribed ambian a couple of years ago and I actually hallucinated on it. Very bizarre. Later on I discovered that hallucinations can be a side effect of ambian.

I hope you and your doctor can get to the bottom of your problem.

Re: Nightmare/terror side effects

It is just Tamaze. I think the mixture with the concerta means there is mixed messages in my brain. It is as though part of my brain thinks i'm asleep so it is letting the unconcious come into light. But due to the concerta my mind is still aware of what is going on. So when it becomes horrible I am totally conscious but my body is paralyzed. I try so hard to wake myself and imagine hitting myself to wake up but I can not move my body. I tried to scream last night but nothing came out. And I thought I was in my childhood house and when I opened my eyes was shocked to realise I was not there. Very very disturbing.

Re: Nightmare/terror side effects

Yuck! I would be afraid to go to sleep if I had dreams like that. I now take seroquel for sleep. Works great for me and I am not hazy the next morning. Unfortunately, seroquel can be expensive if you don't have good insurance. You could be right about the concerta and temez working against each other. If the concerta is working for you, maybe you need to try a different sleep agent. Wish I could be more helpful, but I don't have much experience with the ritalin type meds. Tried ritalin and it just put me to sleep. LOL

A nightmare tip is (never been on sleeping pills though) widening your eyes extremely wide in the dream. Your eyes will open in reality =)

ADDerss appear to produce to few 'sleeping substance' to sleep.

Mine is extremely light and wake up all the time. I'm very sensitive to temperatures above 10° and if higher just plain can't sleep... The results are worse symptoms than normal, overreacting. If there was one way to make it better it would be great !

So annoying...

Re: Nightmare/terror side effects

Just did a google search and this came up. I should have come strait to the board as I normally do. 4 days on Concerta now and had a horrible nightmare just like you guys described. The bad guys were talking about how to chop my body up to fit in the boxes they already had and I couldn't do anything about it. They were going to do (or had done) the same to my family.

To make things worse it was "ground hog day".. It kept repeating.

I had been stressing about unfinished contract work (nothing new there for most people here), but was so tired I said f' it and went to bed.

When I woke up it took me a while to tell myself that it didn't actually happen. Once I did I started feeling better. But I'm not rested today. I don't think it will scare me away from Concerta as it's been working pretty well. I didn't take any today cuz I want to sleep well tonight.

I had very Vivid dreams on Straterra, even nightmareish, but it didn't scare me to my core, they were in-fact entertaining like watching a horror movie.

Well that's my story. I'll post back here if it continues.
