Going to see my doctor next week. Need some advice.

Hello! First time poster here. I hope this is the right forum to ask this!

A bit about me: I'm a 25-year-old male currently going to school for medical transcriptioning. Throughout my life, I never once suspected that I might have ADHD. I always had a rough time in school, even to this day. I would just barely scrape by, doing just enough homework to be okay and studying just enough to pass tests. I would spend hours daydreaming. Unless my work was exceedingly easy, I could only spend about 5 minutes working on it before drifting off or becoming distracted by something else. I always struggled to focus, but always succumbed to the thoughts swirling in my head. I never once thought anything was wrong with me - I was always like this, after all. The teachers, however, thought otherwise, and wrote me off as learning disabled and sent me on my way.

Ironically, I can focus pretty well where mental dexterity isn't exactly required - my job, for example. The thoughts and distractions are still there, of course, but I auto-pilot through my day without much problem. My focus seems to be the strongest here more than anywhere else during my day.

Being in med school, I'm naturally inclined to research and happened to stumble upon ADHD. Much of what has to be said here speaks true to me. I reflected upon my past issues, broken relationships, current issues, and I became troubled. Could I have ADHD? Curious, I spent some time on online tests, and they seemed to agree with me. One told me to see my doctor immediately, which I plan on doing.

My question is this: How do I approach my doctor about this? I'm admittedly pretty uncomfortable with this issue, and I'm not particularly skilled in conversation (my thoughts have a tendency to dart off half way through). My concern is that he may conclude to the assumption that I'm just some college kid wanting a quick pill to pull off an all-nighter before the final exam. If that was the case, then there's no point in me continuing my classes as I'm already failing. This depresses me. I simply cannot afford to see a specialist - I do not have insurance. This is the best I can do for now. Can anyone provide some advice?

Sorry for such a long post. Thank you for reading!

The best thing I did was to writing out, in detail, all of my struggles and behaviors from childhood through adulthood, along with how they negatively impacted my life.

Once you see it all written out plain as day, it will be easier to go in and talk about why you are seeking help.

Re: Going to see my doctor next week. Need some advice.

Remember that ADD/ADHD medication does not help non-ADD/ADHD people pull an "all-nighter". My therapist, whose work history includes social work, has said it's similar to speed for people without ADD/ADHD.

Thus ask yourself these questions, answer them honestly, and I think you'll feel more comfortable with what you need to do.
Do you want something to help you stay up all night?
Do you want something that's a study aid?
Do you want to be able to control your focus and keep it aimed at your school work?

Personally I'm seeing some key words you are using that leads me to believe you are on the right track. Keep at it and don't be afraid of finding out you have it. Knowing you have it makes it easier to adjust and compensate. Try to put everyone else out of mind and focus on yourself and what you need.

Oh and your school may have some way to help you out. I'm unsure but once you've talked to your doctor it may be worth looking into. Maybe there's a sponsored program somewhere that can help you see a specialist to find out for sure.

My other bit of advice. I have no health insurance. I had a hospital visit that was covered by a government program and even before that the fees where cut dramatically because I'd be out of pocket. (Still high as hell) The doctors and therapists I've been to also have been understanding in that regard. Just because you don't have insurance doesn't mean there's nobody willing to help you and no way for you to afford care. It might just take some help and the right person. Do some research.

I'm also looking to meet with a physician sometime soon. Though I can't give you any advice myself, good luck to you!

Re: Going to see my doctor next week. Need some advice.

First of all,

Going to "a doctor," if you mean general practitioner, isn't the bed move.

1. You need to get diagnosed. You can tell your doctor (assuming you mean general practitioner) and see if he knows a psychiatrist or psychologist who can diagnose you.

2. Go get the diagnosis. It's key. There are different aspects of ADHD and some of us suffer a mild version and others of us a more severe version, then there's the inattentive vs. the hyperactive, etc .... So you need a diagnosis so you can get a better sense of how exactly your mind works.

3. If you go through #1 and #2, then you won't run into the suspicion, because you are getting a full diagnosis. And frankly, a general doctor should NOT write a script just based on a brief conversation with you.

Bottom line: think in terms of getting diagnosed, not meds. Meds follow a precise diagnosis.

Good luck.

The other reason is that since we don't know why many psychiatric medications work, and there can be many confounding factors that might make them godsends for one person and a danger to another, it's best to be seen by a professional who works with them exclusively. I'm dealing elsewhere right now with a number of people who think that mental disorders do not exist, and that psychiatric medications are universally dangerous. Needless to say, nearly all the tragic anecdotes they use to support their ideas involve medications being prescribed by doctors who didn't practice the kind of oversight that a psychiatrist knows is necessary.

Re: Going to see my doctor next week. Need some advice.

Hello all,

I'm sorry I took so long to reply, and I apologize in advanced if reviving dead threads is against the rules!

I did go see a general practitioner. Reflecting back on this, it was a pointless move, considering I do ultimately need to see a therapist, but she did think that I had ADD based on the symptoms that I was experiencing. She did put me on bupropion, which has improved my mood tremendously and relieved a lot of the stress I was having, and ampheta s/combo (generic Adderall) 10 mg once a day, which so far has been life changing. My focus is pure and my attention span lasts longer than five seconds, my anxiety is almost completely gone, and I have tons of energy. I do get a bit of a headache after a while, but that is irrelevant. Having said that, I completely intend on seeing a therapist sometime in the next week - if I do have ADD, I want to know from someone who specializes in the matter. Fortunately, the clinic I am attending is income-based, so I have had a bit of luck in dealing with these matters. I want to express my appreciation for this forum for everyone's advice. Thank you!
