greytgang - Houston, TX

Hello everyone ,

I'm Alexandra, I live in Tomball(several miles North of Houston), TX and I was recently diagnosed with ADD. I have been battling with it all my life and because I studied pshychology for a while I thought I was able to deal with my differences all by myself.

Finally, after one year of research about ADHD I was almost certain I had it but it took me another year to decide to get diagnosed.
Why now after so many years?
Well, I am trying to apply to A&M veterinary school and I am finally decided to finish my psychology studies so I can apply behavioral theories to animals.

I have been through school in Europe(where I'm originally from) and managed to complete graduate school - MBA but it was a great challenge and I don't want to repeat the enourmous effort.
I have almost completed the pre-requisites to apply to A&M and my GPA is exceptional-3.9 but now I'm having second thoughts about graduate school and I don't want to spend twice a long to reach my goal; I want to keep focused, therefore my need to get diagnosed and get help so I accomplish what I have set to do.

Many of the stories I have read so far on this board look very similar to mine and I finally realise how many people are like me. I always felt like an outsider but I know I am not alone anymore...

Alexandra

Hi, Alexandra!

I want to share something with you that takes my breath away!

Through conversation and sheer curiousity, I keep running into people from other countries who have advanced degrees, but are now working in service jobs.

Lots and LOTS of people, too...not just a few.

The manicurist who was an accountant in Viet Nam; the tile installer who was in international finance in Poland; the "big box store" employee who was a chemist in Nigeria; the museum docent who was a lawyer in eastern Europe...it just goes on and on.

It seems we have some of the best educated people scattered throughout the general workforce imaginable.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a B.A., and I, too have considered going back for an M.A.

In my case, I can't rationalize the expense required for me to accomplish this goal, as people in my chosen field are already affected with severe job cuts and/or layoff issues...not to mention that I ain't no spring chicken, either!

I realize "you are never too old"...I'm just considering that any prospective employer may consider my age a liability rather than an asset (can you say, almost half a century young? )

I don't mind learning or working hard...but $20,000 out of our nest egg at this time in our life is too large a chunk for me to follow my dream, without regard to the sacrifice I'd be asking of my life partner.

You might be in a different place...

I would consider these things:

1. How old are you? What is the norm for an acceptable age in your chosen field?

2. How deep are your pockets? Can you afford to follow your dream?

3. How commited are you, and will it have an impact on your family?

4. What are your expectations, and what are the prospects for obtaining a job once you have your degree?

Looking forward to hearing how you sort out these things for yourself...
