Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

I was switched from the brand adderall xr to the generic (barr) xr in may. Not long afteri noticed swelling in my ankles (however I attributed it to being on vacation and horrible shoes). after the vacation it continued (some days better then others). In october it started to get worse -- arms and face swelling occasionally with continued leg swelling. I noticed that after eating a meal containing salt would increase the puffiness. I've had bloodwork done and everything is normal. I literally gain 3-4 in day/day depending on if I eat anything with salt. I know the generic contains saccharin sodium (brand does not). I am 23 years old and I do not have any other health conditions. I eat very healthy so I'm thinking maybe an adderall link. Has anyone experienced this?? Any input would be sooo appreciated.

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

Yes, I have, and just realized this was the cause. I am prone to a little swelling sometimes from hormonal fluctuations, but when I started with the generic about four months ago, the swelling became crazy! I too am healthy, have a good diet and exercise. My shoes were painful and my ankles disappeared from all the fluid. My eyes were extremely puffy every morning. Nothing would make this go away. In addition, the generic didn't work and made me feel yucky overall. I told my Doc that I thought the generic version sucked, so this month I got a prescription specifying name brand only. The swelling was GONE within two days and hasn't come back! I have never had a generic drug that wasn't noticeably inferior in some way or other.

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

Are you drinking enough water? My eyelids, feet, and ankles all tend to swell up when I'm not drinking enough water. I notice it the most in the morning. The Adderall might just be dehydrating you and if you up your water intake it might help a little.

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

Did you find out if it was the generic adderall causing the puffiness? I am Barr Dexedrine generic and I have gained 20 lbs of fluid! i am on this med for idiopathic edema but it's not helping. I keep thinking my weight gain is from the Dex b/c this has never happened before. i am depressed when i dont tkae it though. also, my aldosterone is really HIGH - wondering if it's from the dex

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

Hi I'm the one who originally posted and multiple blood tests, colonoscopy, rheumatology, vein specialist, and allergy testing later.. swelling is still here! It's odd because some days are worse than others without any rhyme or reason. I wonder if its the strength?? I'm on Adderall xr 30mg generic global brand. Anyone else on those? I've also been taking dexedrine 10mg as needed and notice I get red in the face. Anyone else get the redness?

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

No this is not the result of generic Adderall. That is quite ridiculous. What is the physiology there? If you don't get it on regular brand-name Adderall, then you won't get it (from) any of the approved generics.

Ankle swelling (edema) can be the result of a few pretty serious medical conditions and you should see your doctor. There is a lot of talk on this forum about the "dangers" of certain generic drugs, but the vast majority of it is likely psychosomatic.

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

I Appreciate your response however, as a pharmacist I know that generics differ in their inactive ingredients. Those in Barr differ from Global. If its the actual drug you are correct, it's the same active ingredient thus it shouldn't make a difference. However many people may be allergic to the inactive ingredients. I used to not think that was possible but have had many patients switch back to brand for certain BP meds due to allergic reactions with the generic.
I have been to numerous doctors to discuss this matter and noone seems to know what is going on. I don't think it's out of the question to consider this a possibility.

In two years since you first posted, did you ever discontinue the Adderall or switch back to brand to see if the edema resolved? Wouldn't that be the most straightforward way to figure this out?

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

Bmh2012 - I have edema as well and I believe it's from Dexedrine and adderall. Ive gained over 20 lbs and its all puffy, dimpled fluid. Also, having terrible joints pains since I've been on the meds. My GP confirmed people can gain. Weight or have allergic reactions to the meds. Not sure if it's from fillers or maybe dehydration from the meds. I'm going to wean off and see if it helps. Anyone else have edema?

It is very possible it is psychogenic in origin. The mind is extremely powerful... I've tricked myself in "getting" a variety of diseases over the years. True story.

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

Ceebee, calling someone's symptoms or illness psychogenic or psychosomatic is not only hurtful and insulting, it's also rarely correct. Especially when the person saying it has as little information as you do about that someone's medical and psychological history.

I'm aware of the placebo effect, and have first hand experience with the power of the mind and its ability to modulate pain and other subjective symptoms. I understand about psychogenic fevers and other kinds of illness that are caused or exacerbated by stress. That's not what's going on here. If you can show me an article describing a case of psychogenic lymphedema, or can even propose a plausible mechanism, it'll show at least a little credibility, but it's still insensitive to imply that the OP should quit looking for a medical explanation and figure out the psychological reason she's making herself sick.

In medicine they say "when you hear hoofbeats, you think horses first, not zebras." You rule out the common causes before considering exotic ones, otherwise you're basically just guessing. Aren't they teaching that in medical school anymore?

I just can't see how your comments were supposed to be helpful.

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

Yes, it does cause swelling! I just started on generic Adderall XR (DEX) a few weeks ago. I had been taking brand name since the age of 9. I switched for possibly being cheaper with same results all around & it's terrible! Nauseating feelings and a little dizzy at times. I am not taking any other medications and fluid in my ankles and feet are the worst. I assume I'm allergic to the inactive ingredients and so is everyone having this issue. I heard it can cover the entire body and if it gets worse to go to the ER.... s c a r y... Never doing generics again. Clearly they have the same ingredients, but the measurements are off making it a hit or miss & the inactive ingredients suck. Plus the price of the original and the generic are almost the same!!... $30 difference?

Hope this helps. PEACE

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

SHIRE the company makes the brand also makes the generics Teva/Barr,EON,and global, The only generic they do not make is actavis. Actavis is the first non shire company to get approval to make its own formulation and this was approved about 6 or so months ago. I tried the actavis once and it was horrible. I have had all of the other generics and brand and they have been the same. The swelling is not brand related imo. It could be related to High BP from adderall but not because of the brand.

Re: Barr generic adderall xr causing swelling?

So I stumbled across this discussion because I was having issues with my doctor's office making me feel like a drug seeker every time I go in for refill scripts even though I have been on the medication for more than 12 years now.

But I stayed because 2 years ago, I experienced the same thing. It started happening in May while on a trip to Las Vegas. I woke up the second day I was there with extreme tightness in both of my Achilles. I initially chalked it up to all of the walking I did the day before but not really, because I am an avid runner.

Anyway, it didn't get better. It got worse - a whole lot worse. Over the next 2 months, the bilateral Achilles inflammation got so bad that I had to have my son help me walk from the bed to the bathroom and the swelling in and around my ankles progressed into pitting edema at which point I went to a local clinic.

Funny thing, when I pulled my pant legs up the Nurse Practitioner's face went pale. She immediately got up and told me that I needed to go to the emergency room immediately. That these were symptoms of congestive heart failure! I told her that this was not the case and asked here to run all the tests she could while I was there and then...if necessary, I would go to the emergency room.

Lol... Well the tests came back and page after page all I heard was literally, "Well those are perfect, so that's not it." She had absolutely no idea what was causing the edema and inflammation. She sent me home with a pair of TED hose and an order to elevate my legs anytime I could. A few days later the pain had moved up to my lower back and was so great that I caved and went to a local ER where I was tested for everything you could think of...they even did an ultrasound to try to find clots which I told them not to waste their time on because the symptoms were BILATERAL!!!

Got sent home with another pair of TED hose, some anti-inflammatories, no diagnosis and a $2800 bill.

After another week of pain and misery, I decided to go to the University of Utah medical center and have the experts take a look at it. Again, same battery of tests but this time the diagnosis was inflammation due to an exercise injury? Again, makes no sense due to the fact that it had been ongoing and progressively worse for more than 3 months as well as the fact that they symptoms were BILATERAL!!!

Again, sent home with another script for an anti-inflammatory and no real diagnosis or means to heal.

So...being as laid up as I was, I had plenty of time to scour Google Scholar for anything that turned up when I used the keywords amphetamine salts, pitting edema, legs, and inflammation. And then...there it was. A study evaluating a generic form of Adderal IR that showed a small percentage of the subjects exhibiting my symptoms. I used that information to do another search and found out that the "binder" that was used in the generic was thought to be the cause.

With that information, I contacted my pharmacy and they informed me that they had in fact, changed their generic and it was the month before I started exhibiting my symptoms. (For the record, I'm not sure what the specific brand was but they were the round pink version...if that helps.)

I made them aware of my issues and surprisingly, they decided to not use that brand anymore and switch back to the original generic. Since that time, I have had zero edema and zero stiffness. There it was, 4 months and $7 grand in medical bills later, it was a google scholar search that solved my problem.
