Misdiagnosed for sooo long

Hi all -

I'm new here; there's some great stuff to be read. Thanks to all for sharing.

I was wondering if anyone else suffered through a long period of misdiagnosis. I had bad OCD when I was a kid - from about 6th grade through 10th. My rituals were very evident in the beginning, but eventually became more internal and 'hideable'.

In college I sought therapy for what had become major a anxiety issue but no more rituals. I worked on it for several years and then became depressed. I think the depression came on mostly because I was so hyper aware of my anxiety and trying to fight it and not making much progress.

Ten years later (after much anxiety and depression), I've been diagnosed with ADD and the more I read about it the more I'm like 'holy crap - that is me'. It's helpful, but at the same time, part of me is wary. It's like I don't want to get too excited about yet another diagnosis that might somehow explain my messed up mind, or that I'm just some loser looking for validation from others.

I just wrote like five different sentences and erased them. I guess I just wanted to throw in my 2cents and this was a good place to start. I think I'll go back to reading posts and not doing my work.

Re: Misdiagnosed for sooo long

I went through a lengthy period of perhaps misdiagnosis as much as missed diagnosis.

I've been hooked in with neurologists since I was 4 due to epilepsy, but they always dismised the behavioral issues as being due to epilepsy.

I was told that brain surgery for the epilepsy could help the behaviors that were presumed to be cause by abnormal electrical activity.

I got pretty short with my neurologist over how much my quality of life diminished post surgery instead of getting better.

Finally at 32 I got a diagnosis of adhd, after my daughter had been diagnosed.
