Re: Would you encourage or allow your kids to play Football? (American football)

Yep. Football rules

Me even having a kid comes with a risk of them having a dysfunctional brain. I try not to over think it

Millions of people played football as a kid and are fine

Heck When we played non team games we would play on the concrete with no pads

And turned out just fine I sure did I did

Im sorry but saying "I played and I survived" isnt good enough. There is mountains of evidence that CTE/TBI theory. You say you were fine, but how do you know for sure? How do you know that your adhd wasnt made worse by a blow to the head? And saying that when you played it was on concrete and you were ok doesnt make the evidence go away. You might have been ok cause you were not playing in professional football. Just because kids survive and adults survived as kids playing football doesnt mean that the evidence supporting the dangers of it isnt true. You were lucky. I dont want some kid to be the unlucky one.

Now, if someone receives obvious head trauma the person must to go through a concussion protocol in most organized sports.

Which is also recorded.

I am sure there are still lots of concussions not reported but in my opinion the protocol for diagnosing and prevention of concussions has improved.

I think that Allan Schwarz's intentions are to help improve the protocol for ADHD diagnosis and reduce the number of ADHD misdiagnosis, in a similar mathematical way.

At my sons high school, at the beginning of every sport from football to girls soccer, they are required to get a baseline on the concussion machine. The test consists of rapid fire questions such as click if this word is written in blue, how many fence posts in this picture...etc.

They take this baseline BEFORE contact is allowed during practice and if there is even a 1% chance the kid had a collision or a hard fall that might result in a concussion they are escorted to the machine by a staff member to take the test, which has their specific baseline scored and programed.

Did you know children under the age of 11 are now banned from heading the ball (using your head to aim or stop the ball) in soccer? 11 and 12 year olds have restrictions, and there are no restrictions above age 12.

I definitely wouldn't encourage it just as I wouldn't encourage motorbike racing or boxing but I guess it depends on the age if I can forbid or not.

Fuzzling is going to do chess and thumb twiddling.

Re: Would you encourage or allow your kids to play Football? (American football)

I think another scary thing is sometimes concussions take awhile to be noticed or "show up". My husband got hit with a branch and didnt feel bad and have symptoms of concussion til the next day. When he want to get medical help they determined that he did have one but it was news to us. He seemed fine the day before. Now imagine this scenario with football. Repeated blows to the hear or a hard tackle yet the student doesnt exhibit signs of concussion. Its only the next day in SOME cases that the student shows signs or is seen by a doctor. In other cases the signs are so minimal that they are not noticed so now you have someone with a mild concussion continuing to play because they do not know they have one. The easiest way to avoid concussions, especially hidden ones is to not play head hard contact sports. That's not to say I dont think anyone should be allowed- I am not going to tell someone how to raise their child or ask that kids be banned from contact sports-its up to mom or dad. I can only control what my kids are allowed to do.
