Exclamation Finally made appt about possible ADD

Funny, I've been using the name ozonegirl for a long time, it may be more appropriate than I thought.
I have one thought, and question about the whole ADD thing. To be honest, I am scared to find out that I have it, because even though I hate (a LOT) the procrastination and never finishing things, I like what i call the quirky part of it, and I don't want to be turned into a living zombie follower. Does that make sense?
I haven't read enough on ADD to know if this happens if you get put on medication, but I'm scared of losing ME.
What if I don't have another original thought in my mind, and I end up not MINDING the truely DULL job that I have?????
I love learning new things, and do get bored easily, but what if I don't even care about constantly learning new things anymore???
HELP! This is part of what has kept me from going in to get help. Thanks in advance. - Diana

Diana - Minnesota

OK, typical, I posted before reading the instructions. I don't know if my previous post should have been done in another forum, sorry about that.
Here is my intro:
I'm from Minnesota, 46 years old, just finally admitting that I should probably go in and be checked out for ADD. My daughter has been telling me I should go, for about a year now.
I have an appt this Thursday to be seen, but in the meantime I am checking online for information, and found this forum. As you can see formt he previous posts, I have some reservations about going in to the Dr. - diana

Smile Welcome ozonegirl!

Welcome! I haven't been to the doctor yet either. I'm 42 and a mother of 3 sons who are adhd, bipo, add...so why wouldn't their mother be ADHD, it was like a light bulb went off in my head when I read Driven to Distraction and Answers to Distraction...great books....try reading them..alot of helpful and knowledgeable info.

Don't worry about losing yourself while on meds. If you do feel the meds are too strong, you can adjust them. In my own experience, it was like turning on a light when I started taking Ritalin. Once the honeymoon was over, I realized that, yep, I'm still ADD, and still basically a flake. But the meds do make my life easier!

Welcome OZoneGirl
Do you have a close friend that could promise you that if you start acting a certain way when/if you get meds that they'll tell you right away?

Here's a link to the Treatment & Medications Forums <http://www.addforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=18>
and use that search pulldown on the top of each page it rocks!

Good job on taking the first step!

Stupid Psycologists!

I swear, you would think I would after having seen 5 or 6 idiotic psychologists, I would have learned to just go straight to a psychiatrist!
This psychologist I went to yesterday (about possibly having adult ADD) really wanted to just hear himself talk.
His whole analysis of whether or not I have ADD was based on my elementary grades! GRRRRRRRR.. After about 10 minutes of hearing him talk and not being able to get in a word edgewise, I just half tuned him out and waited for the dang appointment to be over. That was a $20 copay down the drain.
He seems to think upping my Paxil will solve all my problems, this after I told him I loved paxil, but the ADD type symptoms were still there.
Anyway, I agreed to go to the GP next week to up my medication, but I was thinking of talking to her about it and seeing if she would just let me try something for ADD to see if it helps.
Can you get your ADD medications through a GP or can you only get them through a psychiatrist?
