Who can legally diagnose ADHD in the UK?

Had a 90 minute assessment for ADHD a few days ago at the Maudsley Hospital (London), with a "Neurodevelopmental Specialist" and they said I will see a psychiatrist in a few weeks time.

I don't understand why I would have an in-depth assessment with someone that can't diagnose, and then only to have m repeat the same questions/answers with a psychiatrist.

Just asking if anyone knows, can this person legally diagnose me with ADHD in the UK?
Or perhaps someone that has been with Maudsley Hospital, run me through the next steps?

I do not know much about the UK and adhd but the understanding I do have with the maudsley Inst. is that the specialist screens and then forwards you to the psyche for the purposes of the diagnosis and medication management.

Thanks Sarah. Could I ask, what do you mean by"the purposes of the diagnosis"

Does that often mean if you've been forwarded to the psychiatrist, they think you have ADHD?

Appreciate response

Again, this is me sort of guessing based on my UK friends but I think its almost like screening..to make sure you do have adhd or at least troubles that indicate the need for a psyche doctor. I could be wrong... but Im guessing it means your case warrants further assistance which is why it was sent to the doctor.

Yikes, I am not looking forward to another 90 minute assessment asking the same questions.

What did your friends think of Maudsley's assessment process?

Re: Who can legally diagnose ADHD in the UK?

My understanding broadly is that neurologists can do some evaluation of ADHD ... in part to rule out other problems that may be causing the symptoms.

Lots of conditions can cause the symptoms of ADHD ...

You know ... might be a good idea to call the person who evaluated you and ask them ... A nurse on staff or a secretary could consult with the doctor and pass that info onto you ... where you stand as far as the diagnosis.

Re: Who can legally diagnose ADHD in the UK?

I contacted the hospital, and they forwarded my appointment with the psychiatrist this thursday! and it is another 90 minute assessment probably covering the symptoms again.

Very nervous since this is the determining appointment about whether or not I have ADHD... Worried I won't explain things properly enough and get dismissed :/
