Re: Merry XMAS/ holidays/ spirit
I have the spirit alright I have the ba-hum-bug spirit.
I began disliking Christmas about four years ago - It was like one year I just got sick of it and never recovered. I think it is all the damned commercialism. The only thing that the materialistic money grubbin noise makers have not screwed up about the holiday season is the Christmas lights. I still like the Christmas lights. I am thinking of skipping the commercialism of Christmas and just celebrating Yule - warm fires, yummy snacks and the company of friends and family. My buck fifty formally known as my two cents!!! |

Re: Merry XMAS/ holidays/ spirit
I haven't been in the spirit for 7 years now. I wish my house was though. I generally hate holidays. The only ones I celebrate are the ones I am forced/obligated to. I don't mind the commercialism, as I've always been very generous and enjoy any excuse to give gifts (usually things I bought myself throughout the year and forgot to return before the return expiration, but are brand new - don't tell!) I just hate the obligations to see family and feel a certain way, and the whole arbitrary thing.

Re: Merry XMAS/ holidays/ spirit
I never liked what Christmas has turned into. I can understand the being-happy-together-with-family angle, assuming you have family to speak of and assuming they are willing to play ball.
But should there not be more? Should we not really take the time to sit back and reflect on what it means to be a human being? And should we not do that every day? Its only last year that for the first time I recaptured some of that spirit because in that year I had met so many great new people right here on this forum. And being with them, in spirit more than in person gave Christmas an extra dimension.

Re: Merry XMAS/ holidays/ spirit
I don't care much for Christmas. Too many murder/suicides, too much commercialism. I do like Thanksgiving and Halloween though.

Re: Merry XMAS/ holidays/ spirit
To quote a therapist of many years ago, "Christmas is brutal. People DIE of Christmas".
I believe that it is important to celebrate or not as each individual finds appropriate. I grant that people with children don't really get to have that autonomy unless they choose that for themselves and their families but to the extent that it is possible, I urge people to CHOOSE to define and celebrate all holidays based on what they think is right.

Re: Merry XMAS/ holidays/ spirit
I don't like Christmas. Of course I don't like it: I don't have a functional family. Christmas, family, father, mother, brother.. all these words make me slightly uneasy.

Re: Merry XMAS/ holidays/ spirit
I like the spirit of Christmas.
What I don't like is the commercialism that makes people think they are obligated to max out their credit cards buying gifts for everyone in order for it to be a good Christmas. In my family, my father and brother are both attorneys and make a very comfortable living. Me? Not so much. So the gift-giving thing is always very uncomfortable for me because I simply cannot afford to give gifts as nice as the ones I am given. I would really much rather do away with the exchange among the adults, and just save it for the kids (my two nieces).

Re: Merry XMAS/ holidays/ spirit
I like Christmas. some years are merrier then others but I try to find the moments that are really lovely and focus on enjoying those. I have learned to lower my expectations of the holiday and somehow i am always pleasantly surprised with what happens. there are moments that I am glad I was there for and will cherish them always.
I find that watching one of my favorite Christmas movies helps. It's a Wonderful Life ![]() |

Re: Merry XMAS/ holidays/ spirit
I'm comfortable with Christmas because I like how I celebrate it with my family and I like how I set limits on how I celebrate it.
We pick names amongst the adults for gift-giving (if the person is interested in participating in this Kris Kringle activity) and then give the actual kids gifts as we like. Other than putting together a gift for my Kris Kringle person and perhaps getting some assorted other gifts, I don't hit the big stores where I find the Christmas spirit to be distorted and instead go to smaller places that are fun and homey and interesting. So, no, it's not being either a Grinch or a Santa Claus in my case. Just a warm sharing with like-minded people. Cats ![]()
