Re: The weather

It's going to be colder in Chicago than in the South Pole on Wednesday. That's just horrific!

Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change.
Shame cannot survive being spoken. It can't survive empathy.

Over 39°C yesterday (100 and something °F) yesterday. Everyone is pretty much housebound at the temps.

McTavish posted that schools in Minnesota are closed statewide. If that includes the twin cities, this is the storm of the century.

they are predicting another windy rainstorm coming through here tonight.

edit: it's not because of the snow, but extreme cold: -30 predicted in minneapolis, for tuesday night, - 55 wind chill. Schools are closed

Holy crap. Insane. Hope people's heat don't break down.

Temperatures have been amazingly moderate this winter where I live. I don't remember any year before that's been this moderate. Mostly dry when it's usually mostly raining.

The only way I keep C/F straight in any way is 37.0 C= 98.6 F which is "the normal temperature for humans."

But this polar vortex sure can. Mail delivery cancelled all across the MidWest.

Re: The weather

My sister lives outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and it's all shut down there. She and her family are off from school or able to work from home today.

I was shocked by this. Saw it on the morning news that our capital city was canceling mail. I'm sure there have been other times this has happened but not in recent memory. Wait...I don't even think the power lines down on our street stopped delivery. What made me sad is that my Hub had to go to work. My work told us all to work from home if we could. Hub works in a factory and the only thing keeping it warm are the ovens. He's wearing long johns, sweatshirt and a welding jacket. My poor guy.

The plant where my hubs worked (Morton Salt Plant) never closed unless the
power went out. As long as even one person could get there in a 4-wheel drive
they expected everyone to get there.

I remember one time when we had a big blizzard, he told them if they sent
someone to get him he would work. They suggested if they did he bring enough
supplies to stay at his grandmother's house there in town. We lived 20 miles
away in a teeny tiny town. As I recall, they didn't find anyone to come get him!

Re: The weather

I'm watching local news and they just reported that all churches have opened their doors to people looking for someplace warm to stay. Local libraries and some other public buildings are allowing people to come someplace warm. One group is going around looking for people who need help. Stuff like that just chokes me up and restores my faith in humanity.

I don't ever remember there actually being no mail service, or schools being closed for 2 days, in Minnesota.

Re: The weather

Day 2 and not only are schools and colleges out but so are some businesses. My company has closed some offices and the chat and email world I live in is at a standstill. My poor hub, good man that he is...went to work. When I started his car this morning to warm it up...talk about a car complaining. Thank heavens we recently bought a new battery...I don't think it would have started this morning without it.
