Driving Anxiety

How bad is your driving anxiety? What causes it slow processing of confusing road signs. Mine is pretty bad.

Re: Driving Anxiety

If I don't know where I'm going, I get a little anxious. It happened the other day when I was taking this girl home. I knew where I had to go, but it wasn't coming as easy as I pictured it. I had to wait a while to till I found the road I needed. It's a very uncomforable feeling.

Re: Driving Anxiety

It's so bad I don't drive.

I have my permit (which I got when I was 28? I think) and learned to drive a manual transmission, and then... haven't done anything else with it. I still don't have my license.

I'm afraid of running over an animal, mostly. Also, I get very intimidated by other drivers.

Thank you for this post. My anxiety is a result of worring about other people getting mad at me and potentially honking the horn. I usually feel this way when I have stopped (ie making a left hand turn, stop sign). When I'm at a traffic light and it is red, I wonder if there was a Do Not Turn on Red sign. I only wonder this if I'm hurried or if there's a driver behind me. I'm very concerned about getting honked at. It's terrible.

Re: Driving Anxiety

It's funny, my sister, who doesn't have ADHD, has driving anxiety, particularly manifested in that she refuses to drive on freeways. She's never driven on one. I think it's ludicrous and it frustrates me perpetually when my parents enable her by driving her places (mostly my mom) that she's perfectly capable of driving to herself but won't. I've offered to show her how to drive on a freeway--as if it's that difficult--but she always gets ****ed off when I do.

I guess this is how people feel when I tell them about my ADHD--that it's ludicrous, a personality defect, and/or doesn't exist. So, I should be a little more compassionate about my sister's driving anxiety. People in glass houses...

anonymouslyadd, that sounds like social anxiety. I have that, too, when driving, but it's not driving anxiety, per se--just more of the same old fear of negative evaluation by others. Mine manifests more in people "competing" with me on the road and fear of getting into a road rage incident with someone else.

I was not able to drive for years because of my anxiety, I finally found a P-doc who put me on klonopin and it worked miracles for me..I drive out of state now.Maybe your sister needs meds. It sure cant hurt..Hope she gets over her fear soon

Re: Driving Anxiety

I'm freaked out by being honked at as well. So driving a manual (where I might kill it at a stop sign or light) is even worse.

Re: Driving Anxiety

My driving anxiety is so bad that I'm 22 and I have yet to even try learning how to drive.

Sigh.

I would say that...pretty much everything worries me about driving.
