Is switching from Adderall XR to Dex safer?

I wanted to take Vyvanse but my insurance denied my plea. Adderall XR is great and I have taken it for a year now but it's not as perfect as it should be.

I've been reading about Dexedrine and the top concern is that it stops appetite. I've lost some weight with Adderall but the XR does give me more appetite.

Before I can even consider Vyvanse, I must try Dexedrine. I don't know why my doc and insurance is like this...

Has anyone switched from Adderall to Dexedrine?

Re: Is switching from Adderall XR to Dex safer?

I can’t speak for XR but I’ve switched from Adderall IR to IR Dex. Unfortunately, it’s all about the money which is why your insurance put up a road block. There’s no generic for Vyvanse and is much more expensive than Dex. which does have generics.

I wouldn’t consider one to be safer than another. They both work very similarly and have similar warnings and potential side effects. Adderall is 75% Dex.

Stimulants in general commonly can cause a decrease in appetite. From my experience after about 2 weeks my body becomes acclimated and appetite gets mostly back to normal.

If anything, I had less appetite on Adderall than Dex. I’ve switched back and forth multiple times.

Why do you switch back and forth...? And why stick to IR instead of XR?

Iíve switched back and forth mainly because of side effects from certain generics. For a while, I could only get Teva or Aurobindo Adderall in my area and the side effects and efficacy were terrible. Thatís when I asked my Dr. about Dex. and tried different dosages and generics.

For the past year or so Iíve been able to get Malinkrodt Adderall which works pretty well for me which is what I started on after first being diagnosed.

My Dr. has always prescribed IR and we have never discussed ER. Not sure why. I have an appointment in 10 mins. and will ask her about it.
