This is cool, but what you really want to do is find your friend who's a computer geek and have them set up a small Linux box for less than half the price.

Edit: Ok, the free web space is cool, though.

Is that an offer to set me up with a bit of web server space? Oh that's so sweet! Pm me the details will ya?
I don't have the bandwidth to support a site.. wish I did.

Thanks Garry. I'll check it out.

Opps.. didn't read your post carefully enough. exeter is right. A little P2 box with 256 megs of ram would do nicely. You could likely do it Garry with that Linux disc I sent you.

I just found a not so old 10 gig scsi drive for free with card and cable. The girls box is looking good..

What's your recommended web server for a small static site exeter?

This is a great way to get DNS services for free. I got this rigged up for the girls to ftp to home from school.

If you need a hand there are a few *nix heads around. Just ask and I'm sure if I can't answer the simple stuff someone could help us out.

I have oodles of server space & bandwidth i'm not currently using...

Edit: For anyone who's interested in the netbox, know that it's promise of increased security is a very dubious one. You'd be much safer leasing space from a professional webhost, as they have in-house security experts to deal with any issues.

Do you do CSS's as well so maybe I don't have to finish this dang project?

It depends how many hits you expect the site to get. , and if you plan to do anything else with the box.

Assuming it's a personal site that won't see a lot of traffic, and the web server is the only thing that will be running on it, any ol' box will do, as long as it doesn't get posted to the front page of slashdot or something. As a matter of fact, my router has a builtin web server for configuration purposes running on a 166 Mhz ARM processor and 8 MB ram.

I'd either go to the used computer shop and see what you can find there, or keep a lookout for anyone giving away/throwing out old hardware. If you go the shop route, you'd be amazed what $50 US can get you.
