Re: You know your child is ADHD when...

When she asks whether what we're watching on TV is actually from tomorrow rather than today!

Re: You know your child is ADHD when...

This is my daughter! Torn paper all the time!! Yesterday before going to the grocery store she cut two sides off an 8 1/2 X 11 piece of computer paper and then gave them names and carried them around for hours! She has toys, dolls, stuffed animals...but it doesn't matter.

Another time I had let her put her sewing supplies in her room. By the end of a day it looked liked a mouse had made its house in all of her organization boxes. Loads of scrap fabrics shred and put with petshops. She was furious when I made her clean it all up and throw the scraps away.

Re: You know your child is ADHD when...

This thread makes me smile, I did all of these when I was a kid!! Feels good to know we are not alone! I don't have kids yet but I guess there's a high chance for them to inheritate my ADHD! At least i'll know what to look for!

Re: You know your child is ADHD when...

....he is having a race and while running around the track and someone falls or slows down he stops to help them up or slows down to have a conversation with them

....he taps the wall in his bedroom at bedtime because he can't sit still long enough to fall asleep

....he gets what we call his "evil look" and takes off after his sister and pulls her hair/bites her/etc

....doesn't filter what he's thinking before forming words. IE - tells my stepfather "hey grandpa, you're old, want to know how I know? You have crumples!!!" and then tells my neighbor "Ms. Sarah, you should see your hair dresser because your hair is white on top and it doesn't match the bottom" hahaha

....he just turned 9 years old and still has to wear "goodnites" at night time but hates it because he is embarrassed (poor guy )

(one of mums memories about me)

mum comes home to find the dog, me and the house completely sticky and wreaking of eucalyptus....cough syrup has been tipped all over the place and fed to the dog and olbas oil all over the soft furnishings...the babysitter unable to control me tells mum i am the most defiant little girl she has ever had to babysit....

when your son has set off the alarms in 2 different supermarkets by opening the emergency exit while your bagging your shopping!!

when your son is the only person the rabbit attacks because you know he must have been winding the poor thing up

My twelve-year-old still does this, and will not wear a belt because it takes too long to undo. Some of his more perceptive classmates pick up on the "potty dance", and will tell him to go to the bathroom.

Re: You know your child is ADHD when...

(oh wow, I'll be here a while... here are a few highlights from my now 14yo's life...)

...when you tell your 9 yo to go get dressed for school, and 10 minutes later you see her chasing squirrels in the back yard... STILL in her pj's.

...when you catch your child reading a book IN the shower. To her credit she was holding the book outside the curtain.

....when you have the nightly "light search" in her room to find anything that might illuminate enough to read.

...everyone has key locks on their bedroom doors.

...if you have to lock your pantry at night so your child can't eat EVERYTHING. Mostly chocolate chips you were planning on making cookies with.

... if you had to put a lid on your 13 month-olds crib, labeling you a monster for locking up your child like an animal. (we lived across the street from a lake.) But it didn't last long, because she quickly learned to pull up the mattress and crawl out underneith.

...if any nursery worker that watches your child says, every time, "Is she always like this?!"

You know your child is ADHD when she brings home her homework assignment but forgets the textbook. Three days in a row!
I hear you, my child is always coming back downstairs without the very thing she went up there for! And she also forgets to bring things home from school, or even take things to school when I have given them to her before leaving the house

Re: You know your child is ADHD when...

You know your child has ADHD when:

They have their clothes laid out next to them and are supposed to be getting dresses and have been asked 5 times, but are instead hanging upside down on the sofa

You can't take them to group lessons because they need too much one to one attention

When they get so excited about seeing the park - it looks like they've never been before (even though they go all the time) Or they cry so loudly and dramatically over something really minor

They knock at least 1 cup over a day.

More food goes on them and the floor than goes in their mouth

They can't sit still for 1 minute or look you in the eyes

Re: You know your child is ADHD when...

When you son, who after repeated failures at school says "Mum if school were a film I would be top of the class". He remembers all the details in films, he watched a film in English and then in Spanish the next week and he could pick out the parts where the translation was totally different.

Please someone make school into a film or tv show, make it exciting, colourful, sounds, music, laughing then perhaps our kids would find some motivation.

Re: You know your child is ADHD when...

....at the age of three she climbs to reach the top cabinet to find those stupid Jolly Rancher lollipops you thought you had successfully hid from her and she breaks a tooth trying to bite into it......then forgets to tell you about the broken tooth.

....at the age of four decides to take the expansive VHS movie collection you have for her and separate the videos from their covers and put them in two separate piles, then have half of the 'tape' pulled out by the time you figure out that it has been too quiet.

....she has decided it needed to "snow" on her doll house with her brand new big container of baby powder, then decide it also needs "icicles" which she proceeds to apply with baby lotion.

....she flat out refuses to potty train until four and a half and then suddenly does it in less than 3 days.

....at 6, she begs you to change the radio station because the classical music piece we are listening to is making her sad because it is from "Milo's Bad Dream" in Milo and Otis which she last watched seven months prior But cannot remember if she ate an hour ago. Honestly, on this one, I had to write down the Piece (George Shermann) and stick Milo and Otis in the second she went to bed. It was the exact same piece of music. I was floored.

Some of these might not have happened if her Nana had been watching her more closely when I was out working....but you never know.
