Re: Do you tell people you have ADD?

Slowly but surely a lot of people have found out, but the stereo typical attitude, plucks my last nerve!

Re: Do you tell people you have ADD?

Interesting responses. I'm probably a little more on the "private" side in general. I understand that everyone has to do what works for them, but personally I can't imagine telling an employer or casual acquaintances. Even with my close friends I wouldn't deny it, but I wouldn't advertise it either. This is such a small part of who I am that it seems pointless to bring it up.

That said, I've been in situations where someone has gone on and on about their medical problems (mental health or otherwise) and it makes me kind of uncomfortable.

My 2.5 cents.

Re: Do you tell people you have ADD?

DITTO I was 47, just found out in February 09. At first I was relieved, I finally had answers to things I also did without having any answers. Things are better now, but I think I hyperfocus more now with Meds. I take 110mg of vyvanse daily.

Re: Do you tell people you have ADD?

I had seen an article similar to this before and I remember it making me think...WOW YOU ARE SO ADD.....I'm all of that and then some probably. No goal setting, no organzation skills, loosing everything...i have a very stressful job that i would love to get out of, but you know the money thing....I was very difficult to get along with before meds. My dr wants me to see a counsler for learning new skills, but cannot find anyone that will take my cheap a** insurance.

Re: Do you tell people you have ADD?

Jv01,

I agree. I would just not let anyone know unless you feel like you feel like you need to tell that person.

Tomtom

If your employer has a has something called and EAP Program (I think), I would check into it. I think the program will allow you to have so many sessions free and than after those couple sessions. it costs a set price. I would at least ask.

Re: Do you tell people you have ADD?

I don't shout it from the rooftop, but you can definitely tell if I have not refilled my meds for even 1 day. I feel like ADD/ADHD has become so commercialized lately that people are pretty understanding. If they aren't ,then they haven't told me beacuse I would let them have it

Re: Do you tell people you have ADD?

Not usually unless they tell me they are in the same boat as me, or if I want to get that oh-come-on-what-a-crock-of-sh*t look from someone...which I don't, so I prefer to keep it to myself most of the time. It's need-to-know information...my doctor, my husband, my closest friend are the only ones that I feel need to know.

Re: Do you tell people you have ADD?

I usually refrain from it. From my perspective, I have ADD but my ADD does not define my identity. I am not my ADD, so I usually do not want to go around and tell everyone that.

It also shows a sign of deep understanding of me and that is a great achivement for someone (not being cocky. I dont let many people in.)

If they ask, and I know them well, sure. Ill tell them. Its no worries from my standpoint.

Re: Do you tell people you have ADD?

I have not told my family or friends. started taking meds when I first started going back to college at the age of 33. I ordered them online for six years without a prescription until the website was no longer. I managed to finish college and get straight A's with the meds. I managed to get a job and did really well- even got a promotion and a new job. Last month when the online website was shut down, I was off the meds for a whole month. I couldn't function. Everyone was wondering what was wrong with me but I couldn't tell them. I finally went to a doctor and almost cried. She prescribed me the meds and I'm now back on track. Still haven't told my family or friends. Its embarrassing to me.
