suggestions on new social activity

I need to find some activity that keeps me in social contact with more people.

Any suggestions on something? Preferably something that doesn't cost a lot of money to do though a little money is ok.

I wanted to play on a tennis league 2 days a week but unfortunately, my knees can't handle it so had to quit. I volunteered for a bit at a non-profit tech company but I'm bored with that. Am open to other volunteer work, hobbies, sports that aren't hard on joints, etc.

Thanks.

Re: suggestions on new social activity

Do you do 1-on-1 therapy anywhere? You might want to see if the facility has any groups in place. My facility does traditional support/education based groups...but they also do social groups too. Like each monday people get together to play board games, and on thursdays they do art activities. They also do day trips (like drives up the mountains and such) and once in awhile will take trips out of town. Just ways to keep people social and not isolating like a lot of people struggle with.

As far as volunteering goes...have you ever considered going and visiting some elders at a nursing home? There's a HUGE need for it and you'd be surrounded with a bunch of people who would absolutely soak up any love and care you can give them...and it feels freaking great to be able to give that to them!

Re: suggestions on new social activity

Tabletop roleplaying games.

Dungeons & Dragons is of course the most famous example, but there are lots of other games with different rules and settings: Post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk, western, many variations of science fiction, house cats (yes, there are RPG settings that are about playing as cats, dogs, horses, etc), and so on...

Advantages:
- All ages play RPGs. It's not just for introverted teenagers (as the stereotype goes).
- Engages your imagination.
- Highly social.
- Costs as much or as little money as you want it too. You can get started with as little as $20 in a lot of cases (used rule book and dice) and never have to expand beyond that.
- If you find the right group of players the experience can be absolutely hilarious, even more fun than being drunk with a bunch of drinking friends.
- If you find the perfect group of players, the experience can be incredibly moving as you all craft amazing stories together.

Disadvantages:
- Finding a group that fits you.
- Finding a consistent group.
- Being highly social, it can be challenging for introverts or folks with social anxiety problems.
- It can get somewhat costly if you get really into it and decide to start buying tons of cool s*** (all the rulebooks in leather-bound limited edition, $200 ceramic dice molded out of old space shuttle tiles, armies of miniatures, etc).
- It can get very time consuming if you get really into it and are the GM (game master).

It's not easy, is it?
So many of these games etc end up locking us in to more screen time.

For sports that aren't too challenging on bad knees- table tennis works well for me.
In Oregon, I would be thinking of a bushwalking or field naturalist's group.
As a rule these are quite social events.

Volunteer work can be a bit of a trap, but if you get into a position where you are supporting one or more frail elderly, you will almost certainly get a pleasant surprise. I used to be a general practitioner, and my frail elderly patients were overwhelmingly friendly and positive ( this arrangement meets everybody's social needs). They were also the only ones to offer me a cup of coffee when I was exhausted from doing home visits.

The other area of volunteer work that I can think of is acquiring some counselling skills and working with them. There is more of a separation between therapist and client, but you can lean a lot- which helps you.

Other volunteer work (nice if you can pull it off) is an assistant with equine therapy. There is lots of competition for places though.

Also- volunteering at a lost dogs home or animal shelter.

All those nice cuddly animals will drop you into a more relaxed state- which will attract more spontaneous social interaction anyway.

Complaining, every one can add a little something.

Re: suggestions on new social activity

Most social activities are either closed down or very limited around here
due to the pandemic. Only churches are exempt and I don't go to church.

Thankfully I am playing Dungeons & Dragons online with some old friends.
Not as good as in-person but better than nothing.

Re: suggestions on new social activity

Volunteering at an animal shelter or rescue group is great if you don’t mind socializing with animals that are deprived from love, affection and are in need. They will always except you for who you are and the bonds you make are unconditional. It’s very rewarding for me.

Yeah. I started this thread precovid. How things have changed. So status update, I’m not doing anything now except playing virtual reality, flat screen video games with others, and Skype lol. My video games are the same pretty much as your d&d and actual do involve tabletop games sometimes. I stay in nearly all the time cause I’m higher risk.

Greyhound, I love animals but I always hated having to clean up after them. If only I could just play with them and not do anything else.

Re: suggestions on new social activity

Strange, we were just talking about Fight Club last night.

I really miss band. apparently the mayor wanted available band members to "play outside of restaurants" in town today. but this seems highly irresponsible even though reopening is going well here. also it would be one of those vague events where no one quite knows what's going on and i'd have to dig out that horrible, stiff blue polo shirt. And I am not fond of our little mayor, in the first place.

we'd have had to rehearse at least once, and i am not sitting in an enclosed space with wind instruments. I have to go into town for groceries. i hope i don't see anyone from band, i never answered any of the emails about this.

I had dinner with two trumpet pals last week, which was just lovely. But i was exhausted afterwards. It was like i'd been socializing all day.
