"Is ADHD 'real' or are kids just lazy?"

Last night I found an article online which posed the question: "Is ADHD real or are kids just lazy?".

After writing and re-writing my opinions (I get wordy and tend to rabbit-trail), I just decided to leave this as an open topic for discussion. I can't expect everyone to agree with me, and I certainly don't expect to change any minds.

So, you can choose to answer the question (with or without explanation), or give your thoughts/opinions on the question itself, just follow the forum guidelines and be respectful with your comments.

Re: "Is ADHD 'real' or are kids just lazy?"

If people can't see it, it isn't real. Like, if you don't use a wheelchair, you have no business parking in a handicap spot at the mall.

I would like to take these people and plug them into my brain for an hour or two and then have them say that ADHD isn't real.

ADHD is real, it's like saying to someone with a broken leg "you're lazy, you don't have a broken leg get up and walk"

It's real, but I'm sure some kids are just naturally naughty.

Re: "Is ADHD 'real' or are kids just lazy?"

I think most everyone on these forums believes it is real. But I know that's not true of the general population. I posted on facebook the other day that I was on hour three of fifth grade homework and my brother's girlfriend (my brother is the absent father of the fifth grader) posts that she sits her son in the corner if he can't focus and he doesn't get up until he's done with his homework.

I repeated this to my co-worker and she said "yeah, he'd just play with his toes for three hours." It's funny how she knows my nephew better than his own father does (not to mention the girlfriend who's never even met him).

People don't get it if they haven't experienced it.

Yes, less distractions help, but you can't take away the kid's brain, and that's where the real distraction is.

The funny thing is that my nephew can waste hours of time, but as soon as he starts to actually get to work he starts feeling the pressure of how much he has to do and how long it's going to take. He's getting better, though. Timing him while he works helps a lot, so that he can see he can actually get a lot done in 20 minutes or however long even though it feels like an infinite amount of time is passing for every problem.

I feel like you wrote this about me as opposed to your nephew...

To .AdamH: I'm kind of the opposite, I have a huge resistance to starting anything, but once I start, it's hard for me to stop I've been working on paying attention to time while doing homework with my nephew and give him a five minute break every 45 minutes or so.

Re: "Is ADHD 'real' or are kids just lazy?"

It's very real. If it were fake, why can medicine help it?

Why do you suppose that it is always up for debate? No one questions the existence of depression, or ocd, or anxiety, or autism. You can't see them. If someone has pain, this is legitimate, but you cannot just look at someone and tell they hurt (other than their facial expression, maybe).

People don't want to think it is real, first because their brain works differently and they can't fathom anyone's brain working any way other than theirs, and secondly, because if they can label you "lazy", "stupid", "disorganized", "behind", etc...then they can look down their nose at you, and say, well at least, I am not a chronically late, sloppy, space-case....like you are...ugh.

It is also funny how people who know nothing about it will jump on the bandwagon and argue so passionately against it. What is it hurting them? "Well my third cousins neighbors son's best friend's sister had that, and they cut out ______ (insert: sugar, carbohydrates, pop, video games, TV, saturated fat, vagisil, bubbleliscious, etc) and they are CURED!"
