Rock & Roll HOF Induction tonight-stupidity and snubs!

So Jann Wenner, Rolling Stone Magazine's publisher, is having his annual bash for his personal playground known as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tonight. And tonight, we shall see just how far the definition of "rock and roll" has been stretched, with the induction of....please make sure you're sitting down-I don't want you to get hurt...ready? ABBA. Yes, "that" ABBA-the crowning epitome of 70's schlock pop, the antithesis of rock music!

I wish I could say that this is a joke, but today isn't April 1st. Ponder, if you will, the other "rock and rollers" that these nitwits have ALREADY inducted:

BeeGees
Blondie
Earth, Wind, & Fire
Grandmaster Flash
Michael Jackson
The O'Jays
Run-DMC
Isaac Hayes
Jackson Five
Gladys Knight & The Pips
Joni Mitchell
Parliament-Funkadelic
and yes...Madonna!

There's more, but you get the idea.

Now, check out who's eligible, and not yet in...consider their body of work in ROCK music compared to the above:

Rush
Yes
Emerson, Lake, & Palmer
ELO
Alice Cooper
King Crimson
The Cure
Gram Parsons
Depeche Mode
(early) B-52s

(pretty obvious the HOF doesn't care for "progressive rock" huh?)

Stevie Ray Vaughn
Warren Zevon
Dire Straits
Moody Blues
Boston
Kiss
Chicago
Peter Frampton
Bad Company
Heart
Cheap Trick
The Cars
Journey
Foreigner
Steve Miller Band
Little Feat
Mott the Hoople
Linda Ronstadt
Grand Funk Railroad
Doobie Brothers
George Thorogood and the Destroyers
Badfinger
Joe Jackson
Nick Lowe
Dave Edmunds
Edgar Winter
Ten Years After
Boz Scaggs
The Replacements
The Cars
The Guess Who
BTO
Todd Rundgren

And, it's fairly certain they don't care for the "roots" of metal, or hard rock:

Iron Maiden
Deep Purple
Def Leppard
Judas Priest
Guns 'n Roses
T. Rex
Humble Pie
Thin Lizzy
Motorhead
Scorpions
Pantera
Sammy Hagar (solo, Montrose, HSAS, Van Halen)
Slayer

What do you think? Certainly, there's quite a few non-rock 'n rollers in the HOF who music I do like...but to consider them rock, AND induct them into a so-called "hall of fame", is beyond ludicrous.

What's next-Tiffany? Culture Club? Whitney Houston?

Curious as to who YOU think I missed who belongs in a REAL rock and roll HOF.

Re: Rock & Roll HOF Induction tonight-stupidity and snubs!

I would love nothing more than to see Depeche Mode and The Cure given this honor, but that doesn't mean that ABBA don't deserve it.

Trying to define "rock music" is tricky business. Looking at your list of who is eligible but not in, for instance - Warren Zevon, the Cars, Nick Lowe, Joe Jackson, the Replacements, the B-52's and the aforementioned Depeche Mode and The Cure could all easily be described as pop, not rock. They have also between them been called new wave, alternative, progressive, underground, goth, new romantic...you get the idea.

In fact, "rock and roll" ceased to be a useful descriptive label somewhere around 1976, with the rise of punk.

Rock and roll is now more a spirit than a specific musical style.

(And what the heck do you have against Culture Club, anyway?)
