symbols for medication

what do the symbols that come after the name of the medication mean. Example XR. is there anywhere I can find a list as to what they mean?

LA is "long acting";
SR is "sustained release".

I think the symbols are made up by each drug manufacturer --they're just part of the brand name. AdderalXR is an extended release version of Adderal, and ConcertaXL is an extended release version of Concerta. Seems like there's no "set definition" that is used --the drug companies make them up as they go along.

And it's confusing because sometimes one of those sounds like long release but it's actually the slower release version.
