We need a forum for people who have been on Meds for longer

I've been on Adderall for almost 2 decades. I'd like a forum where I can talk to people who are a bit more experienced. Because as it is now, there are people who have been on the medication for 5 months and all their posts are the same to me.

I've been around this forum in the past, and there's always lots of new people misinforming other new people. I'm not saying any of that would change, but at least there wouldn't be noobs trying to tell other noobs to drink orange juice to help absorption.

Not a bad idea. You could always stick around here and help all of us very overwhelmed newbies.

Then I'd overwhelmed too If I see something I believe factually incorrect I'll compulsively reply. Thats why I try to just scan over the thread titles quickly to avoid the temptation to get involved. Its much easier when I browse unlogged. lol

Re: We need a forum for people who have been on Meds for longer

I understand how you feel. I've been on dexamphetamine sulfate for 12 years. Until the other day I didn't think there was anywhere I could post in the meds section coz in the US it's called dextroamphetamine (dexedrine).

So anyway I've never really spent a lot of time in the meds section. The orange juice thing I only found out a few years ago when I found the product information pamphlet online. No-one had ever bothered to tell me about the acidity thing.

Yeah the issues you get after being on meds long term are a littke different.

Maybe when you post put something in the title like 'for those who've been on meds long term.....'

Re: We need a forum for people who have been on Meds for longer

i completely understand your point, and not only am i an orange in the medications section, i've been on medication for over two decades myself and i hear you loud and clear.

here's the thing: there are a limited number of sectioning optinos available. and medications has a number of them already. that may not be the case forever, and, in fact, i and other staff do hope to address this and other concerns at some point.

how to overcome the limited number of sections and get a subsection for longer term medicatino users to weigh in or discuss more than "i just started taking this pill...is it ir or xr?" etc...well, start threads. start threads and if they generate discussion and we see that there's a demonstrable need, your suggestion will carry more weight should any restructuring happen in the future.

oh...and by "start threads" i mean in medications...not just here in case that was unclear

good suggestion!

Re: We need a forum for people who have been on Meds for longer

There is a crying need on this forum for a section dedicated to the "long haul" ADDer, those of us diagnosed years, not days ago. There is little discussion of the impact of AD(H)D through the lifespan. You may grow up and you may grow old -- but you never outgrow AD(H)D. (The memory lapses of ADD just merge into the onset of 40-something CRS -- Can't Remember Sh*t. )

I was diagnosed at age 35. I am now in my late 40's. I have over a decade's experience with stimulants. Needless to say the endlessly repeated posts that go "I just took my first Adderall, what should I expect?" do eff all for me.

I agree, and while I was diagnosed 24 years ago, I'm only just now actually reading about and learning about ADHD... took me long enough

I was on Ritalin way back in the 80s for a good number of years and on methylphenidates now, not much has changed except the correct dosage (now) vs WAY too much (then)

Re: We need a forum for people who have been on Meds for longer

If it were a subforum of the medications section it would be deserted. I think it would fit in well under the Adults with ADHD section if there's room.

I'm not saying u need to have been on medication for 10 years, but more along the lines of what retromancer is saying.

IDK why there needs to be a womens private forum or mens private forum when it's an anonymous internet forum to begin with. Just merge them and hide it from google results.

Re: We need a forum for people who have been on Meds for longer

I was diagnosed 12 years ago but i came off my medication 4 years ago, I started on methylphenidate which I was taking 4 times a day but I didn't like it, I found that my appetite was suppressed rather badly (my mom noticed not me I was 10 haha) but by the time It was realised that the tablets made me 'feel sick' I was waay under weight, had to see a dietitian and then was moved onto concerta xl which was good at first but it still suppressed my appetite. by then I was old enough to realise what was going on but could only describe it as making me feel sick? wow my posts on this forum just seem to be huge walls of text lol hope all that makes sense?

Re: We need a forum for people who have been on Meds for longer

Definitely would be good under Adults with ADD... I'm going on 3 years taking Adderall. A forum blocked free of the 'what do I expect? should I take another tablet now?' posts, or the questionable posts, "for a year now I think I have ADD, how do I talk to a doctor about this?"
All respect to those members on this board, but a cleaned of them free forum would be lovely.

Re: We need a forum for people who have been on Meds for longer

HAH .....*pouncing on the idea * .....I once asked about setting up a sub forum for us "oldies but goodies" ......same kinda thing .....I was diagnosed almost 20 years ago now, and I will be 62 in July .....been taking dex IR for most of those years....and only go back and forth with adderall IR because of the continuing problem with the meds shortage.....

* quick .! hide my soapbox....I can rant about the meds shortage for weeks *

anyway ......every now and then I'll pop into a convo with a college age kid .....( where is StoicNate I wonder) .....

but like everything else in life .....you tend to hang more with like people ....older folks who have been taking meds for years, have the most in common with each other .....and even older folk who were recently diagnosed have more in common with us than do college kids ....

....so I pretty much scan the "headlines" on the new posts heading ...and find that sometimes there are days when there's just no one talking that I am interested in talking about that subject ....

then, like last night ...jeesh, I was beat tired and kept stumbling across such interesting threads.....stayed up till after 3 cause I couldn't not participate .....

...but the thing is ......if you check the new posts label at the top of the page, it saves a lot of time ....and you can see anything interesting without having to go to every sub forum you MIGHT be interested in .....

....I stopped paying attention to which forum a thread is located within about 2 to 3 months......and I put almost everything in either General ADD, or DIagnosis and treatment .....treatment covers a lot of ground, and it doesn't have to be "NEW" treatment......anything about treatment could fit there .......
