Question short term focus on a subject matter, weeks to months

Iím trying to figure out all the language I need to communicate this issue. Often it seems to be just a matter of accuracy relaying a feeling to get the right answer.

I switch between related and unrelated topics at fairly regular intervals. Iíll dive deep into something and then hit some kind of barrier. Shortly after I get to that point Iíll pretty much drop it all together. For me itís often money. Iíve set rules that I want to do and learn fun stuff for free. Free hobbies. But Iím honestly afraid Iíll never stick to one long enough to keep it forever.

Recent memory says Iíve learned a considerable amount about crypto mining, watches, fountain pens, birds, family history, cloud computing, web scraping, digital art, knives, photography.

Right now, pens, writing and video games.

In all cases I canít find any way to stoke my desire to continue on a subject. Some subjects have emotional barriers that make me shy from them. I seem to be all or nothing. 100% on board or I canít give a damn. The other barrier I set is money. I canít spend too much money on something. I researched knives for 4 months before (an excellent) $10 purchase.

My wife seems okay with it. It bothers me. Iíll never be great at anything if I donít stick around long enough to do so.

I learned I masked perfectionism as trying to do things ďrightĒ. Such as the right screw for a project or learning the physics of lumber and tolerances.

So any ideas? I tried to stay on one subject but I think I rambled a bit.

Having ADHD we are stimulant seekers. I think when the excitement (stimulation) wears off, we usually lose interest. Iím also all in or nothing on most hobbies, subjects or interests. If it really excites me, I tend to hyper focus and canít get enough until the excitement ends. Once it ends, it takes my interest and desire with it.

Welcome to the forums horsebattery! I so get what you mean. I get hyperfocused on stuff too and then can sustain it. I love that fountain pens are a thing for you because they are for me to!
