Adderall XR helps with focusing but I have zero motivation

Hi everyone. I have been lurking for quite some time now and finally registered to the forum today. I have been reading your stories, experiences and I must say I have learned a lot. I have been struggling with adhd pretty badly lately and wanted to share what Im going through and would really, truly appreciate any feedback.

Background info: Im a healthy male in mid 20s. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was young and took concerta for couple months before national university exam (pretty important) but after the exam my parents (whom I assumed to be really open-minded) didnt want me to take meds for my ADHD. My father was telling me "I was the same" and my mother kept saying "I am confident you can manage without medicine" despite my efforts of explaining the difficulty. I didnt use any meds after the exam. I have managed to finish engineering but they never understood how difficult life can be. They didnt ignore ADHD as disease but they ignored the fact I cannot function good without treatment. I was so smart I dont really need to function 100%. Such a beautiful logic right? I was struggling but still didnt take meds. I found that 2-3 glasses(not more) of alcohol calms me down and I can study/work better and I drank like that almost every day for the past 5 years. Last month I finally got my insurance and started my treatment. I was really hopeful with the treatment when I read many people experiences are reflecting how I feel as well. However, I've been taking Adderall XR (2x20mg) for the past few weeks now and I cant say much changed. Barely anything actually.

I have zero motivation. I know what needs to be done to achieve my goal but I just can't do it. I am recording every single thing into my todo list. All categorized separately. All my intensions are there, taking action is the step I fail. I have no self-discipline. I cant make myself to follow my own logic. I often think what I have is more than ADHD, just a faulty personality. Even though I am not suicidal, I often think how long I can take this without losing my mind completely.

I am taking my meds with empty stomach or an hour after a protein rich meal with minimum VitaminC intake as possible, to avoid any interaction. About 45min after I take the pills I feel the slight increase in focus/attention; however, I have zero motivation to use that focus. Considering Adderall wears of much faster with me (3-4hours) than many people I read online so I thought maybe its the dosage, but shouldn't I feel slightly more motivated like I feel slightly more focused?

Im a 25yo male trying to build a life. I should be sending resumes, attend seminars, extend my network but I just cant/dont. Considering the change a decent job would bring to my life, I should be more than motivated to reach my goal but even sending a mail is an uphill battle for me. I thought ADHD meds are going to help me overcome the gap between my intentions and actions. Now that Im on meds and not seeing much change I am now suspecting that its not the ADHD holding me back, its me.

I am going to take my meds until my next appointment and discuss further with my doc. Hopefully dosage adjustments will make a difference. Honestly I am not sure what Im gonna do if it does not.

English is not my first language so pardon me for the errors on the post. Once again, I would truly appreciate if you can share your thoughts.

The motivation tends to come from within not directly from the adderall.

Do you get a lot of bad side effects from the Adderall? I can't eat, sleep, it makes me warm, kind of sick feeling in my stomach?

Also, adhd is a doing disorder. You know what to do, you just have issues doing what you know.

I agree with your point, it is a disorder of doing and adderall didnt help me. I have seen many people on here mentioned increase in motivation with adderall. I know a pill cant make me do stuff that I dont want but I have tons of to-dos that would have positive effect on my life if completed and I am choosing to procrastinate and be miserable. Even a 5min resume editing is too hard to start/do. I am really exhausted with this situation and dont know what to do.

I've found that using other behavioural strategies in conjunction with meds helps a bit with motivation.

. For example, especially for tasks like editing your resume I find the pomodoro technique quite useful (where you set the time to work for a fixed amount of time after which you can either stop or continue..I find it much easier telling myself that I only have to work for the next 25min rather than expecting myself to finish a particular task. You could start with time intervals as short as 5min).

I also find that using a task.planner (I use an online one called kanbanflow) helps though most of my motivation comes from.setting strict, non-negotionable deadlines, at least at work, which iant great for my stress levels but it does a help with getting the most urgent work done if I've committed to someone else that I will do it.

Anyway, procrastination is still a big, big issue for me and I'm guessing lots of others. I too spend hours, sometimes days or weeks being miserable procrastinating a stupid task that could be done in 5min.

Re: Adderall XR helps with focusing but I have zero motivation

Initially I misread as pornodoro technique and got confused. I have searched the pomodoro technique and will give it a shot however, I try to use this kind of techniques before but I wasn't really successful.

After I post the original post I have met my GP and he suggested I should try Vyvanse instead of upping the dosage of Adderall. I asked him if its okay to try 2x30mg with my remaining Adderall pills and he said its fine. Until today I was using 2x30mg adderall and still didnt feel much difference other than the slightly better focus. Is it possible that even 2x30 is a low dose for me?

I'd also love to hear from the users who DOES feel adderall helps with motivation.

Re: Adderall XR helps with focusing but I have zero motivation

I suffer from the same lack of motivation and I just had to realize that my medication was not the "answer" to getting me prepped and motivated to finish the tasks at hand.

What helped me was that I backed off of my dosage on weekends when I need to do general house cleaning and things that require a lot of physical movement. The extreme concentration only helps me when I have to sit down and work. Even then, I have to give myself a pep talk and organize my to-do lists IMMEDIATELY after taking my daily dose. I'm constantly trying to harness my scatter-brained ADD to my benefit; its when i'm not on my meds that my brain is most active and can produce lists/tasks of stuff that has to get done.

For me, it is a daily struggle to commit to what needs to be done and realizing my personal deficiencies and the lack of motivation that is just inherent in my gene pool. Best of luck to you!

Re: Adderall XR helps with focusing but I have zero motivation

I completely understand the motivation thing.

Here are some things that help with that:

1. You need to know that it is ok to be unmotivated. There are plenty of books and people that will tell you that you have to do something you love. If you can, that's great. If you can't though, you are not a failure. There are many, many people in the world that don't want to have the job they have and wish they had a better life.

2. If you do get motivated about something though- anything- and you think it is a good thing for you, then just do it. If there is something you've been procrastinating that you've always wanted to do, call the number, buy the thing from the store or off of amazon, and just do it.

3. Having family and friends really helps. If you have either, try to live and work for them even if you have no motivation to live for yourself. If you are religious or curious about God in any way, there are many ways to find deeper meaning in your life that goes beyond stuff and financial/career success. A friend recommended: http://www.amazon.com/40-Days-Joy-Fi.../dp/B007V69JHG and it has been helping me. I'm a pessimist, so it is taking a lot of work to change the way I think, and I'm not there yet, but it has helped.
