Is guanfacine actually meant for focus?

From what I've read so far it seems more for reducing anxiety and hyper-activity

Re: Is guanfacine actually meant for focus?

Historically, it's been used more for people who have impulsivity, aggression, physical hyperactivity, sleep problems, and/or tics.

I have not taken guanfacine myself, but I have taken the related drug clonidine, and found that it helped more with physical restlessness and impulse control than with attention/focus/memory.

Re: Is guanfacine actually meant for focus?

I recently tried 1 mg per day of guanfacine ER (the generic version of Intuniv) for about 2 weeks. One of the main things that it did was lower my blood pressure which was OK since it had gone up a little since I started a stimulant last year. And it also brought my pulse down some.

As for its psychotropic benefits, I'm a little less certain and I might not have been on it long enough to get a clear idea. My general impression was that it made me feel a little bit more mellow and less intense, but my mind and my senses also felt a little bit less sharp and clear. I also think that it dampened my libido somewhat.

I'm not physically hyperactive and don't have a temper, so don't know if it would help in those areas. I don't think it did anything for my focus.

In general, I think I prefer not to be on it. When the Vyvanse I'm taking is working, my mind feels crisper and clearer than what it does when I'm taking the Vyvanse with the guanfacine.

Re: Is guanfacine actually meant for focus?

My new psychiatrist prescribed guanfacine IR for sleep. It works really well and I wake up feeling rested. I wasn't sure how to manage the dosage (I wake up a lot at night) so I split it up into pieces. I wanted to understand how it effected me so I took a 1/4 pill in the evening and sat down to watch TV, next thing I knew I was deeply engrossed in the show, laughing at the funny parts and enjoying myself. I realized the medication had calmed my hyperactivity to the point that I was able to sit still and pay attention. It was really nice, actually.

So I would say its better for hyperactivity than inattentiveness - I have both and guanfacine sedates you so I don't think it could be taken alone without a stimulant. I don't take it during the day right now, only at night and I take the IR version.
