Assessment

Hello,

I am new to this forum and believe I might have the inattentive type of ADHD. I am planning to get an assessment but want to find the right person, especially as diagnosing inattentive ADHD in adult women seems to be quite difficult. Can anyone help me please where to start / recommend someone? I am happy to pay for it privately as I think going down the NHS route seems to be quite long.

Re: Assessment

Hi Aurelia,

The NHS often gets bad rep for ADHD services, but I have found Maudsley Hospital in London to be very good for understanding adults with the condition.

I was referred 4 months ago and had my specialist assessment a few days ago. It consists of a 90 minute interview covering the symptoms of both inattentive and hyperactivity separately. You are then referred to a psychiatrist, but I personally cannot tell you what happens at this stage yet. I will keep you updated

I'm a 21 Y/O male and ADHD - PI if anything.

Many GP's are not happy being in a joint treatment with private psychiatrists from what I have heard (not sure if true). But it's one of the main reasons I didn't go private... that and the fact that ADHD services in London have propelled in recent years.

Where about in the UK are you located?

Your location is essential here. I'm going down this route and it's 500 for a diagnosis. one 2-hour session with an answer at the end. On the NHS it was a 1-3 year wait.

How on earth was the wait 1-3 years? Goodness, I only had to wait 5 months, and I thought that was long

Depends on the area, and that is still too long. With how common ADHD is and how debilitating it can be there should be a psychiatrist in every GPs office with the ability to diagnose (and handle other mental health issues)
