Memory issues

Is it common to have a bad memory with ADHD?

I have become increasingly aware that I donít make many memories. For example, my wife will ask if I remember something the kids did when they were younger I have absolutely no recollection of it. I can remember major events but itís as if I am not making any memories in my life.

I know I struggle with short term memory, but I wasnít aware to just recently that I canít really remember my past as well as most people do.

Re: Memory issues

I know we are known to have poor short-term, working memory. I also know we are like 3 times more likely to get a certain kind of dementia.

I haven't heard of any long term memory issues for adhders besides if dementia hits though.

That said, I only half pay attention to what's going on around me all the time. So I often forget things in the long term too cause I was only ever half there at the time.

I'm not nearly as bad as you though and I get the feeling it's not the same for you as it is for me.

Re: Memory issues

My memory sucks big time, even my long-term memory. I feel like, as you said, I also only remember major events, for the most part. A lot of my past is a blur. For example, I just went for a job interview and as I was preparing for the interview and looking at my resume, I realized that I didn't remember a lot of the details of most of my "major achievements". I think it may have to do with what acdc said above, about only half paying attention to things. Plus, always "flying by the seat of my pants", being stressed, confused, etc. takes up so much of my energy, everything seems like a blur when I look back.

I hate when people ask if I've seen a movie and I have seen it, but either didn't pay attention so I might as well NOT have seen it, or I DID pay attention but just forgot everything! So when a sequel comes out everyone's like "Remember this from the first one" and "Remember that from the first one" and Im like "no". Same with books, I love to read, but darned if I'll remember any of it.

Re: Memory issues

Thanks AC/DC and white owl. I do think that part of it is what you are alluring to AC/DC in that we can’t remeber memories we never make in the first place.

I can totally relate about not remembering movies and books Ives read. I guess the good thing is is that I can enjoy my favorite books and movies over and over again like I’ve seen them for the first time. Lol

The dementia thing scares me a bit. That was what I originally thought I was getting.
