Metabolism changes/Weight gain after using stimulants

Hi I'm new here so have no idea whether I'm posting in the right place. I've never had much luck navigating around these forums as I don't have the patience or the attention span and there is always something else calling that needs to be done. I was diagnosed with ADD at 22. I have severe fatigue. The opposite of Hyperactivity I guess. My history is long and I won't go into it now. Basically I want to know about changes in metabolism following the use of Stimulants. I was on 12 x 5mg Dexamphetamine a day. I slowly built up to that dose over time. By the time I weaned off them, they were hardly effective at all. I weaned off them to try for a second baby. Weaning was extremely diffiult. Anyway I have always been slender with really quick metabolism and people have always said, you should be huge for the amount that you eat, especially seeing you don't exercise. I get huge when I'm pregnant. Gained like 25 kgs both times. Anyway after my first baby, (I had never been on stimulants at this point), I lost the weight really really quickly and was back to my usual weight. When my first baby was 1, I was diagnosed and put on stimulant medication - see above. I had been on them for about 5 years when I weanded to fall pregnant with the second. After my second baby, I did all the same things. I breastfed (which i think contributed to the weight loss with my first) and no matte what that weight just wouldn't budge. When bub was 9 months I joined a gym and ate really healthily for months and months and months and still couldn't lose it. I have factored things in, like being a bit older second time round and also that people say that its harder with your second to lose the weight but I have gone from a naturally thin person with a fast metabolism who ate whatever I wanted whenever I wanted and never gained weight (pre stimulants) to someone that has a very slow sluggish metabolism and even with super healthy eating and exercisiing just can't lose weight. I might also add that bubs is now 20 months old and I have about 3 months ago gone back on stimulants to treat my ADD. Just wondering if anyone else has had similair metabolism changes or if anyone knows about how Stimulant use can effect parts of the body that control metabolism. Eg Liver. Sorry for the long post. Brain is not working today!!!

Re: Metabolism changes/Weight gain after using stimulants

Hi BB. I've noticed this in myself. I have been on a diet for over a month and have lost nothing. I thought it was an age thing too (I'm 28 now)....I lost about 70lbs 2 years ago and all I was doing was ADDING protein to my diet and walking 30 mins a day....now I've tried everything and cannot lose weight. Sorry I have no advice but just wanted to let you know that you're not alone!

Re: Metabolism changes/Weight gain after using stimulants

I think this is normal for your age, particularly after your second baby. I'm not really sure it has so much to do with the stimulants. Late 20s, early 30s your metabolism will begin to change and slow down pretty dramatically from what you had as a teenager or early 20something. You may want to consider getting a workup of your hormone levels/thyroid just to be sure nothing is off kilter, but I really think what you're experiencing is normal.

Re: Metabolism changes/Weight gain after using stimulants

My psychiatrist told me yesterday that ritalin and other stimulants make a lot of people eat very little in the daytime and, sometimes, a lot at night.

The part I found interesting for you is the daytime - if you ate way less on stimulants, your natural metabolism might have slowed down to compensate, and you're now "rebounding" from that effect.

My boyfriend used to be very stable in weight and never seemed to gain weight no matter what he ate until he was in his late twenties. Then, after having Mono, that changed completely, and he gained approximately 25 kilos. He's managed to lose about six of them through really hard work, he eats way way less than he used to, but it's like that metabolism he was blessed with disappeared all of a sudden, so yeah, it does happen, if it was that he hit that special age when it tends to happen or if it was the Mono, I don't know.

But it hurts him a lot, and with my ADHD it's been pretty hard for me to help him with it, though I try. Stupid impulses...but I love him so much, and I think he's beautiful. he's one of those people who just always carry himself with dignity and elegance, everyone finds him really charming and charismatic - he has a hard time believing in it still, but I see it every day.

It's okay if men post in the women's section. It's not a restricted area and women post in the men's section, also.
